Deck Description

This is part three of a four-part deck series centering on the four horsemen. I present to you: War.

Death be revealed shortly!

How to Play

You can't have war without soldiers. This deck is simply run, yet highly effective:

Strong offensive presence- First strike throughout. Coupled with Basilisk collar, you gain life and immediately kill blocking/attacking creatures. Spot protection with boros charm, spot removal with lightning helix, umezawa, and sword, and ever strengthening creatures.

Strong life gain: Utilize Basilisk, path of bravery, lightning helix, and (if necessary) Umezawa to gain life and trigger both Ajani's pridemate and well of lost dreams. With the life cushion in place, focus on assault.

Strong card advantage: Browbeat, sword of fire and ice, and well of lost dreams all grab cards, further fueling the war machine.

Archangel of strife! That would totally fit this deck. It costs 7 though. :)

Your lack of war is disturbing. I expected more than just soldiers and the lack of Elspeth in the presence of speaking of soldiers is blasphemy against war itself! I especially expected the red-white hybrid card that has retrace, Waves of Aggression.

Soldiers are a joke when speaking about War. More than soldiers, there are assassins, mercenaries, war-beasts(giants, griffins, behemoths, griffons), and more. Humans are the most distasteful creatures because they believe themselves on top of the food chain, willing to trick and enslave others, sending them off to battle on their own behalves. A horseman of hell wouldn't cause soldiers to fight, he would cause every living race to engage in war, and the dead to feed on the living. With that in mind, Xathrid Necromancer would no doubt help in the making of such a deck. :)

Whether you keep it like it is or change it to any number of ways one might build a true deck of the Horseman of War; Good luck. I hope you settle for something you like and can hold your head up high saying "This is a deck I believe to be a representation of the Horseman of war."

I really appreciate the passion these decks are creating! I've thoroughly enjoyed making them and reading what others think.

I definitely understand where you're coming from; the deck itself is about full-on assault, using the soldiers thrust into the heat of battle. War himself may utilize other methods of destruction, and that's fine- my take was to focus on the battle portion. I'm glad to have recommendations to sideboard and, if it fits well, include in each deck.

Also, don't consider the presented version the final version, and if you have ideas about building a more war-esque deck, launch it for us to enjoy. The fun part of this is that there will be others who will have even better ideas than me- decks that put this one to shame. And that's good! This site challenges all of us to think strategically and create truly unique combinations.

I can pretty much guarantee that the final horsemen will fall true to name in every sense, so hopefully you'll feel more fulfilled with that one. Thanks again for your passion.

You guys who said things like soldiers aren't the most war-like, are wrong. Things like beasts and other animals don't war, they fight . Those are to different things. :)

I think the Horseman of War is the most difficult to portray, especially in MTG terms :-) Especially since War actually encompasses the other 3 aspects of the Apocalypse as well.

I do like this deck however, it does seem very efficient! I like the way it uses soldiers and equipment, but also life-link. Because if you go for an all-out attack it's not war, its a suicide attack. Since strategy is an essential aspect of war, I think the deck is very well themed!
Perhaps some siege engines would be fitting as well :-) I'm a huge fan of Lobbing Crew, but it runs best in Multiplayer and with more multicolored cards so it wouldn't be that fitting here.

Julian, war is not some game like chess where ever piece is a soldier. Pawns at most might be soldiers but it's more likely that only half the pawns would be soldiers, making one-fourth(at most), the units in war Soldiers.

War has happened to other creatures and races. It doesn't take shape just because the fighters are humans, and it can be caused by any number of reasons. The crusades were wars with no soldiers. Cold wars are fought with possibilities, not lives. Monarchy wars were fought with assassins that killed the king, leading to the end of the war. War has an unlimited number of shapes and colors, and are described by the victor.

Anyways; Do you have Elspeth, Sun Champion instead of Elspeth Knight-Errant. She gives more units for +, large explosions for -3, and pump for ultimate. Also, what format are you looking for playability in?

I had actually tried to make my own version of this deck yesterday, although it was ineffective and depressingly bad.

Anyway, just a few cards to think about, mostly for flavor, but they can be useful.
Aurelia, the War Leader
Master Warcraft
Glory of Warfare

Ash Zealot's a pretty good card, even if it's not a soldier. It fits with the first strike theme, and comes with haste and a nifty ability for RR.

ever thought of throwing in onslaught

its an enchantment from exodus if a creature blocks the creature with lower damage is destroyed (happens before damage is dealt")

This looks kinda like the Path to War deck from Magic Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, which was broke as a joke.
