Deck Description

Well, my friend decided to get back into magic, and he asked me to help him with a fast, cheap deck. I already had 4 tempered steel, and a lot of the main cards, so we decided to just throw one together lol.

*THIS DECK WILL BE LEGAL POST-ROTATION*

Deck discussion for Balls of Steel

sweet deck ive been trying to get some tempered steels but where i look (tcgplayer) they are 6+ dollars. anywhere cheaper that im missing? can you check out my ooze tribal deck? http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=214735

I would, but tribal decks are decks I have 0 to suggest. I've never made one, and don't plan on it :/ Sorry D:

But i got 4 tempered steels for 15 bucks (shipping included) on ebay. This was before they were in tiers decks, mind you, but still, 6 bucks for one is relatively cheap. In my local card shop they're 10 each, lol.

That's pretty sweet of you to give someone something as good as this. All that I would suggest is putting in a 4th Glint Hawk Idol and possibly a 4th Etched Champion, but I that might throw the curve a little.

Haha, why thank you. But me and my friends all pool cards. As long as they don't destroy or lessen their value, I don't mind lending them out. (:

We originally had 4 champions, but we found 4 was just too many.. and the idol is great! I could definitely see putting in a 4th, but what to take out.. Testing will probably resolve that, lol

Right I'm not even sure what you could take out it's a pretty hard choice. Might not even need to. A card you could switch out is Porcelain Legionnaire for some Accorder Paladin. I know it's not an artifact but that battlecry could be really crucial.

Battle cry is really sweet, but first strike, in my opinion, is worth a lot more. plus the boost of temp. steel pushes it way over the top

A 4th Glint Hawk idol would really help the deck along. Also, @ Boomimmaboulder, Accorder Paladin is good in Tempered Steel. The deck can be very inconsistent in its kill speed, and the pally gives a third source of pump to your artifact creatures, stacking with Signal Pest and Tempered Steel. Metamorph can be used similarly to copy Signal Pest, or Adaptive Automaton can name whichever creature type you drew the most of in your opening hand.

I would

-3 hovermyr
+1 hex mage
+2 spell skite

but that is just me.

Just a thought other than that you deck looks realy strong. The only reason i say that is you need some kind of protection from removal, and spell skite does that. Plus it is nice blocker. As for the hex parisite they are really good for taking counters off stuff and that is always helpful.

Do you have any suggestions for my pod deck?

i think you mean hex parasite, not hexmage. and those cards are really good, yeah, but they're more sideboard choices, i.m.o. If I were going to a huge tournament, I would no doubt maindeck spellskite to stop the twin combo. But in my meta, there's not really a lot of twin. So they're more of a board card.
And same goes for hex, but in regards to counters.
And Yeah I'll check your deck now, thanks for the comment (:

Yeah i can see them as sideboard, my meta sees alot of removal so spell skit is almost required for main. Plus it is just a really good lightning rod. And yeah i was thinking hexparisite sorry.

Thanks For the comments :)

Looks pretty good. You may want to be careful, though, to not constrain yourself with building for rotation. Steel Overseer and Ornithopter can really help to make this deck strong.

my friend just plays for fnms, so losing doesn't really bother him too much. the deck is solid, and yeah m11 cards would help, but thats kind of a waste of money, soooo close to m11 rotating. :/

3 hower myr ( why not just use ornithopter)
2 phyrexian metamorph (why not use HoB)
3 etched champion (why not add glint hawks)
4 porcelaine legionaere ( why not add 1 glint hawk, 1 hero of blade hold, 1 topther and a singleton warzone)

1. this deck is legal post-rotation
2. whats hob?
3. champions = protection = bashing through blockers *with boost from temp. steel
4. i think porcelain legionnaire is a huge threat. im really not sold on the whole glint hawk idea. but i do love the hero.. maybe I could find some room, thanks (:

Why Glint Hawk Idol and not just the hawk? That thing with Mox Opal is what drives my Metalcraft WW deck man...it's nuts =]

Well i like how the idol gets a boost from tempered steel, and survives day of judgment.

a lot of essentially creature-less caw decks run doj main, so it's nice to not get totally blown out over one

there's arguments for both sides, but i just felt this one was a safer call for my meta (:

Yeah, I guess it is more a preference thing =/

Also, mine isn't Standard, so that factors a lot more into the choices =P

hahaha not standard, well that's a whole different ball game :P

if I weren't playing standard I wouldn't even look at the idol.. lol

A guy in my group is using a similar deck to get his brother back into playing, but he has a set of Hero of Bladehold in his. Good [enter deity here] is the deck fast. My fastest pre rotation deck (my gobbies) was too slow to keep up :(

what about adding a splash of red in order to put curse of stalked prey ? ( mox opal does that but what if you don't have mox opal in play) it would boost your creatures up everytime you attacked as soon as turn 2
IMAGINE:

Turn 1 - Vault Skirge
Turn 2 - Curse of Stalked Prey - boost Vault Skirge
Turn 3 - Porcelain Legionnaire

In turn 3 you already would have a 2/2 lifelink prepared to take 3 in turn 4 ( with lifelink)

That is why i like this deck it has so many ways to mess around with it

Been looking at other Tempered Steel decks to try and get an idea what my mirror-matches might be like. Even if you're running a slightly different build here, this has sick tempo. And, honestly, Glint Hawks are nice, but paying the [w] for the idol if, for some strange reason you can't trigger it otherwise, is NOTHING. You're right, it's survivability is far better than having a non-artifact creature in the deck.

good effort your mate is fortunate to have you "throwing him" a deck together lol, i personally think x 3 condems would give him a hint more removal as a new player he may not see other ways of coping with threats and the extra removaal would serve him well, condem over paths would also stay cost effective, just my prefernce though as deck seems to flow nicley could you check my snapcaster mage for rage deck please buddy love !
