Deck Description

Incomplete, I'm looking to the community for help in finalizing my first Standard deck to play during FNM!! I am new to the MTG scene and I'm loving every fun-filled minute of this strategic, theory crafter's paradise. That being said, I'm at a stand still here.... I'd very much enjoy building a deck worthy of competition at my local FNM hang-out (Action and Maximum comic's, in Henderson Nevada) Working with the card's I've acquired thus far, I'm nearly there!!
Thank you for any constructive knowledge you have to offer, and good luck with your MTG experience.

*** I haven't added land or a real sideboard as of yet, I'm still wading through the 40 card's I'll be using in the main deck****

How to Play

Basically, I'm intending to take advantage of the fact that Sanguine's bond basically exploit's life leach, turning it into a form of double strike where as the second swing is aimed directly at the opponent's face. A second aspect I'm hoping to incorporate into the deck is Xanthrid Necromancer's ability to populate 2/2 zombies in lieu of a human or himself dying, remaining a step ahead of my opponent.

Deck discussion for Unholy Cathedral

If you're focusing on Sanguine Bond, Lifelink, Extort, etc., then you should focus on that. You have a lot of cards that are pretty nice to have but doesn't really contribute much to theme you're trying to play. IMO, it's really difficult to have multiple points of focus with the deck. I like the idea of extorting because as you're getting stronger, the other player is getting a little more desperate. With that idea in mind, you could do without all of those enchantments aside from Sanguine Bond, Gift of Orzhova, and Path of Bravery. I'd probably take out the Bogbrew Witch combo too since that would take a long time to set up. Plus, with the Sanguine Bond enchantment, there's no reason for you to look for the newts.

I would consider making this deck a bit faster with smaller creatures maybe with spells or abilities that produce tokens creatures. Lingering Souls would work rather nicely. Send them in to attack, buff them up, give them lifelink, rinse repeat. Also, if you have some creatures with the passive extort ability, invoke that and get a little bonus damage in.

Also Dual Lands are your friend. Orzhov Guildgate would be helpful here I would imagine.

Hey, your theme for the deck is one of my favorites (I've been working on a couple decks like this too). I agree with QwertyPop that focusing on a few key elements and getting a couple more copies of the cards you're running will raise your consistency at FNM.

Since the theme of your deck is really Sanguine Bond, I recommend adding more if you can (a full set of 4), and definitely 1 or 2 more Diabolic Tutors to search for them (or anything else you might want for that matter). Trimming some enchantments like Holy Mantle, Ethereal Armor, Dark Prophecy and Divine Favor for those would help, I think.

While you could keep the Bubbling Cauldron and Festering Newt combo because it follows the theme (gain life while your opponent loses life), I do think you should probably take out the Bogbrew Witches. They're not that great on their own for 4 mana, and you don't want to spend too much mana searching when you could be playing better cards that follow your theme. Even if they don't drain life, your 2 Desecrator Demons in the sideboard are way better. They're powerful, and can end games. And take out the Vizkopa Guildmages for more Tithe Drinkers. More low-cost creatures with extort will allow you to trigger extort more often. 2-4 more of Basilica Bat or Kingpin's Pet would help extortion too.

Hello! I just got your PM on the forums today...sorry for the delay, I havent been around for a few weeks.

First off I want to point out that you're a little heavy into enchantments for your own creatures. If you're going to be using bubbling cauldron, you're essentially two-for-oneing yourself if you have an enchantment on the creature you sac. Also, blood baron can't be enchanted by white or black spells anyway. However I do love the use of path of bravery, that should definitely stay. Dark prophecy however is a bit hard to cast in two colors, and I'd consider dropping it.

With the removal of a few enchantments, you should probably add some more creatures. Honestly festering newt is a great option. Hes either a kill spell, lifegain with a cauldron, or a 2/2 from your path of bravery. Hard to argue with for one mana. Also, xathrid necromancer and doomed traveler would thrive in here, alongside gather the townsfolk. With the necromancer they give you multiple sacrfices or an army of resistant beaters beefed up by your path of bravery. If you go the human deck route, bogbrew with becomes much better. She gets an entire combo online, and becomes a zombie if you have the necromancer.

I know we're combining three entirely different combos altogether here, but they work so well together. The finished list could end up looking something like this:
3 Bubbling cauldron
3 Blood baron
3 Fiendslayer
2 Vizkopa guildmage
4 festering newt
4 xathrid necromancer
2 bogbrew witch
4 angelic accord
3 path of bravery
2 sanguine bond
3 gather the townsfolk
2 orzhov charm
1 diabolic tutor
2 doom blade
22 land

Of course you should tweak it as you see fit, but this idea really has a lot of potential. I hope I wasn't too late to help out and I hope thatmy suggestions were at least somewhat helpful. Good luck! :)
