Deck Challenge: Modern Hydras

Have you ever tried to make a hydra deck before? No? Probably because it’s hard. Trying to perfectly balance the deck is damn near impossible, and making the deck quick is just as much of a challenge. Which means it’s perfect for this challenge.

I challenge you to make a perfectly balanced, Modern legal deck built around hydras. Any colors work, but it must be Modern legal. Try to make it fast, reliable, predictable, and most of all fun.

Well, this is a legacy one, but if you switch out the non legal cards for the sideboard, it's fully modern legal (the 4x Priest of Titania and the 1x Domesticated Hydra)

People tend to roll their eyes when I start playing this, going "Gawd, another elf deck..." Then boom, Khalani hydra on turn four if you're lucky (three mana, two llanowar elves, elvish archdruid, khalani hydra).

That’s an interesting one. I only wonder if it would actually perform in Legacy, what with hulk flash decks left and right and one turn wins often. Otherwise, there is a pretty low ratio of hydras to creatures, maybe up the hydra count a little bit, because at the moment, mostly all I can see is Elves.

Well, I mostly play for fun versus competitive, so I'm not totally sure how well it 'performs' that way, but it's pretty fast. And it does have a bit more elves then hydras; but it also means you can spit them out REALLY fast. You could probably drop the harbingers and the elven mystics, although it might go a bit slower if you don't switch it for other mana ramping.

Because I'm also playing casually though, we tend to ignore Gilt-Leaf Archdruid's second ability...

Hey, I haven’t tested it but here’s an idea.

This one is also interesting. I think the deck would be pretty slow, because all you’ve got is 24 lands and one ramp card, Llanowar Elves. You’ve also got quite a few hydras in there, I would probably dial it down to only 12 if you can, and add some accelerators, such as Elvish Mystic or Whisperer of the Wilds.

Better late then never ;)

M20 brought us [[Gargos, Vicious Watcher]], reducing the costs for all hydras by {4}, so you can now slam out a [[Hydra Broodmaster]] for {G}{G} ;)
Beside from this, the deck uses classic ramp: [[Arbor Elf]]+[[Utopia Sprawl]], [[Harrow]] and [[Explosive Vegetation]]
