Hello, i would like to ask for some help in complicated situation:
I had:

Opponent casted:

My response was:

Does Toshiro Umezawa ability triggers before Rend Flesh?
So i could use:

Yeah, that works. Rend Flesh hasn't resolved yet, so you can put Counterspell on the stack targeting Rend Flesh.

BTW, this is probably my pick for best way to ask a rules question. Being provided the images of all the cards is nice (especially since I don't think there are any major oracle revisions to those cards).

Can you counterspell a spell that isnt on top of the stack or can you pick and choose which spell on the stack you want to counter?

"counter TARGET spell"
that pretty much intuitively would show that there must be some choice in WHAT spell to counter, but for an official answer, YES you can counter ANY spell which is on the stack with a counter
classic example i remember
I play a spell
opp. counters it
i counter his counter
he then re-counters my original spell(for whatever reason instead of simply re-countering MY counter i.e. mana drain for example)
