Planeswarlkers

If you have a planeswalker on the field can you use life gain/burn cards on planeswalkers? and can you use creatures to block for them

Absolutely, that's actually a very big deal whether to bolt the owner or the planeswalker. A planeswalker is treated almost as though it were another player, only the owner can block for it with creatures.

The trick is that you can only affect a planeswalker with damage spells that hurt a player, or destroy spells that hurt a "Permanent".

life gain does not work because it has no life total, it has loyalty counters
