Are theme decks worth buying?

I'm new to MTG and i really like it, so i went ahead and bought 2 theme decks Dark Devotion and Soratami's Wisdom, and although I like Soratami's Wisdom, both decks follow the theme deck strategy closely which can be bad if i dont get the right cards... And i havent tried to make my own deck because most of the ones i see are way too expensive... So i dont know.. any tips, help, or whatever you can say about the topic is fine and highly appreciated!:D

My advice: Play the game a bit, get to know the colors, card types, and sneaky strategies. Find cards you like, cards you hate, and cards that work well with each other. (Not saying obtain them, just keep them in mind) When you get to the point where you're comfortable with the different cards and sets, find something that you think would be fun. I tend to proxy decks to see if they'd be fun or not, usually creating them out of a singe idea or building them around some of my favorite cards. It's a very open and fun game, even more so fun when you come up with something on your own that works brilliantly against other decks that are more common. That's my input, hope it helps.

If you're not comfortable making your own decks, then I would say that buying a theme deck would be best. Then you could just add a few cards to it, and have a decent deck. That way, you get used to the cards, find out your style of play, etc.

I only bought one theme deck before, and it was because I was jonesing for a Worldwake pack, and the shop only had theme decks, no packs. I got crap, so I learned my lesson.

But yeah, when you're comfortable building decks, you can just maybe buy a playset of a set, which doesn't cost much, unless you buy the rares, which I personally don't recommend.

Good luck with it, and don't let all the cards get overwhelming, like I almost did. Take it slow, play with people who don't care to teach, learn the rules, ask questions, and don't pay attention to the assholes that are out there, and you'll be fine.

Yeah especially if your new to it. What you can do is get a pre-made deck and some boosters and you can edit your deck as you go. Its better cause itll show you how multiple cards can work in unison with each other. Do it!

I've bought theme decks in the past, usually when I've taken a hiatus (which I often do, it's a never ending cycle!) and do not have the patience to draft / open booster packs to acquire a selection of cards from the newer sets. There are also some situations where the deck simply contains several good cards that I need, and is the easiest way to obtain them.

No matter the case, I always read up on the contents of the theme deck. Become familiar with the cards contained within, and the deck's overall strategy. If you find something that suits you -- why not? Go ahead and give it a buy, but only if you know what you're buying first. They're usually not a bad buy, if you're buying them with an intention in mind.. just know that the rares contained within are usually very cheap, simply because they're so easy to acquire. So if you're not afraid of shopping around online, you can usually find the few singles contained within the theme decks that you want for considerably cheaper.

Overall, they're not bad. But only buy if you know what they contain, and have a purpose for them -- either because you already have some cards that could be added to make a decent deck, or because they contain the cards needed to finish off a deck you already have. Or in your case (and what I do when I return from a hiatus), because it is the most feasible way to start a new deck in the most recent format. In either case, it is usually nothing more than a matter of convenience to purchase the theme decks as opposed to questing for the singles one at a time, and you're going to pay for that convenience (though with the booster pack, it's not really that much).

Hope this helps!
