What happens......with double strike!

Judges please clarify,

Kor Duelist +1/+1 attacks and has double strike. Duelist is equipped with Adventuring Gear and a land was played prior to combat giving the Duelist +2/+2.
The Duelist is blocked with a Kraken Hatchling +0/+4 which is then removed from combat/field of play by the effect of Aether Tradewinds.

What happens to the double strike dmage?

Because the blocker isn't there anymore the damage is pretty much wasted. No damage to the defending player/planeswalker.

Wouldn't trample make a difference with the double-strike damage depending on when the aether tradewinds was played?
