Hidden Treasures

I recently dug through an old box of MTG cards that were just collecting dust in my garage. Among other old rares, I found a Black Lotus. At first, I nearly emptied my bowels, but then I thought it must be fake. No way in hell I possess a Lotus. And here is the point of all this. Is there a specific way to tell if cards are counterfeit? I mean, it looks like a real card.. The cardstock is just like any other, the copyright info, even the back art. Could it be that I actually own a super-ultimate-mega rare?

try to sell it, if it seems legit to you and it seems legit to them then everyone is happy

Well, I've been offered 500 bucks. I think it's worth more, though...

seems to average around a grand for 'near mint/light use', at least for the Unlimited print, any alpha/beta listings i've seen are pretty much unrealistically priced and/or part of complete sets

There's a common method involving a blacklight to check for authenticity. I don't know if I'm allowed to link to other sights, but there's a Vintage forum at a site named after Mana Drain. They have a stickied thread in their forums, where there's a ton of tips about spotting forgeries. I don't remember the details myself, because I don't ever have to handle Magic cards worth hundreds of dollars. :(

I hope it turns out legit. I know how good it feels to find a ten dollar bill when doing laundry; imagine a Lotus!
