Echo Mage

If I have a level 4 Echo Mage and I play a Path to Exile with Echo Mages ability do I have to target 3 targets?

Could I say target one target twice and one target once?

yes, you can target the same object more than once.

though the path to exile itself would fail due to the copy targeting the same creature removing the spell's target when it resolves.
