Mtgo

So I am hesitant to open up an account to fill the hours I want to play but have no one to play with....does anyone here have an account?

And can you earn cards? or do you need to buy everything?

and can you play with the basic cards (I've read you get 300 or so when you open an account, but I have no idea which ones) you get or are they all crappy so you'll need to invest the big monies to get something nice going?

I dont wanna buy online cards aswell so...is it do able with the cards you get or not?

any way do or don't?

DON'T

- I have over 3000 cards just sitting there, virtual garbage
- Basically you buy air, prices are slightly cheaper for online cards then for real cards but at least real cards have value.
- the attitude of 90% of the casual players there sucks beyond belief.

this is a typical MTGO evening from my own experience (not making this up)

- log on
- start a game and wait for an opponent
- game 1: I play land, he plays land, I play land, he plays land, I play land, he misses a land drop and scoops. And scooping online is way worse then scooping when playing face to face. It's just disconnect, that's it.
- I start a second game, wait for an opponent
- game 1: I put down a plains and end turn, he puts down a land, plays something and I play mana thite, he disconnects

The only way IMO to play MTGO is to play draft and standard competitions online and playtest tournament level decks versus tournament players (there is an area for that). At least they are serious and you'll have real games. The downside is that it is very expensive.

If you have a play group online that is another story, but playing against complete strangers usually sucks.

I suggest you try MTG Workstation, people that play workstation seem to have a far better attitude then the crowd MTGO attracts. And it's free.

Maybe the attitude of the EDH players on MTGO is better, it didn't exist yet back when I played online. I haven't tried it yet because I'm not eager to buy an entire EDH online deck when I already own every single card I want to play offline.

Hmmmm not free either and I am a software/game developer my self and I hated the interface :S:S....I'll stick to MTG Studio for cataloging...

I still am searching for a deck tester and I found tappedout.net but really don't like the fact that I can't enlarge the cards (or I just don't know how) and that I have to use two computers (or browsers)..does anyone have a good counter solution?

You can download all the cards to integrate into MTG workstation (if you google for them), makes it look a lot better. They can't include them themselves for legal reasons. Basically the interface just gives you a virtual table and you have to do all the stuff yourself. It's not as bad as it looks at first sight, it's just not as user friendly as MTGO. Once you've played a few games and have learned all the keyboard shortcuts it really feels like playing real magic.
As for it being free, playing is free, the cards are free and the application is shareware or something and cheap.

The only thing I don't like about it is the randomization of cards, you get some funky draws half of the time.

I only play MTGO. I used to play paper, but I don't have anyone around me that plays. I was out of the game for probably 5 years, when I decided to get an online account. I was the same as you, not wanting to spend money on virtual cards that I will never own, but to tell you the truth, since you can pick up a game anytime you want it is addicting, and I spend lots on cards now... lol. You can trade other people for cards to, but its so much easier to just buy the cards you need if you know what you're looking for. I like it cause you can jump into a tournament anytime, if you want to play competitively, or you can stick to the casual room. I don't feel so bad about buying virtual cards now, cause I figure, it's just like any other entertainment that you spend money on... For example, I buy map packs for my Call of Duty games, or songs for my Rock Band games. It's basically the same thing. I haven't broke down and bought any Jace 2.0's yet, and I don't know if I will ever spend that kind of money on a virtual card, but that is only cause I'm more into casual than competitive. Basically it's worth it if you like the game and can't play paper. But as a fair warning, it is easy to spend lots of money on it.
