Lock?

Ok let's say that you have Mana Web out and due to Pendrell Mists all of opponent's lands becomes tapped but he still throws out an instant like Naturalize to destroy my Mana Web.

I, on the other hand, have a Sunken Field enchanted land to tap. Do I counter his instant or can he pay the mana to ignore the counter?

depends. does he has 1 extra mana in the mana pool? because even if all lands are tapped, if he tapped the lands for mana and float it in the mana pool, then he can pay 1 to ignore the counter if there is one extra mana in the pool. naturalize destroys the web. but if all the mana in the mana pool is consumed then the naturalize is countered

It actually depends on when he plays naturalize.

- untap
- he pays the upkeep for his creatures (Pendrell Mists)
- Mana Web triggers and goes on the stack
- he respons by playing naturalize

at this point the effect of mana web hasn't resolved yet and his lands are not tapped yet except for those he tapped for his creature upkeep and for paying naturalize. If he still has a land open he can pay for Sunken Field.

on the other hand, like jiggs said, if he lets Mana Web resolve he must say how much mana he takes into his mana pool. Depending on how much floating mana he has naturalize gets countered or not. But this play doesn't really make sense. I bet he played it like I described in the first scenario where web hasn't resolved yet.
