Why MTGO?
I completely understand play testing... but seriously?? Why pay for virtual cards?
Doesn't a game of mtg with friends accomplish the mission?
Are there any other tools out there that I'm not aware of that let you do the same thing?

some free alternatives would be Magic Workstation and Lackey CCG.
I've used both to play with friends from out of town, they aren't great but with voice chat up at the same time it's close enough to the real thing.
the advantage to MTGO over these free ones is simply that it has a much better interface. (also it has a community and tournaments)
I'd say use the free ones if all you want is to play online and/or test decks. MTGO is only worth it if you want to get involved in tourneys(in my opinion)

For pro players it's not hard to see the benefit. Instead of limit themselves to a small group of players, possibly of which non are on the same level as they are, they can play against all the great players anywhere in the world, any time they have time. Building and tweaking a deck for a large tournament is faster when testing online. The only reason I see not to do it (aside from the rediculous cost of buying all those cards online as well) is to not leak your deck to the rest of the world if you have something that can break the meta. In that case testing with your own team is the only option.
For casual magic MTGO sucks.

I've been looking into the Lackeyccg. It seems to work pretty good. Agreed the interface isn't the best but not too bad considering it's free. Thanks for the info on that. I think I can work with it, especially with the voice like Seth said.
I can see the point of MTGO being good for tournaments and testing, but if I'm going to pay for a card I want the Physical card not a Virtual one.
I was comparing prices and in many cases the more popular cards cost as much online as off. That's FRACKEN stupid!!!
