MTG Rulings & Questions
Shuffling question
When starting a game of magic it's regulatory that one shuffles his/her deck. A friend of mine always regulates his lands/spells 1:2 (untill all the cards are in one deck). Then he shuffles. With this trick he has a rather high chance of catching enough mana for his spells. Is this kind of Stacking the Deck allowed in normal play? How far is one allowed to go with this 'trick'?
Edit: I just noticed this is the wrong thread, it should be in the MtG Questions thread, could someone with moderator abilities please move it to the appropriate place? Thanks in advance! My Sincere Apologies!

you can elect to demand your opponent keep shuffling his deck till you're happy it's been sufficiently randomized.
that being said, pretty much everyone i know 'stacks' their decks in casual games as it tends to improve the quality of the games.
less time wasted on mulligans and less games wasted on clumpy land.

Everyone I've ever played Magic: The Gathering with has employed this kind of "stacking the deck." It is commonly referred to as a "Mana Shuffle"

Thanks for the clear and concise answer. We all pretty quickly picked up this trick from him as well but I wondered if it was normal or something that only we did. The regulations on asking him to keep shuffling untill you're satisfied is new to me, good to know :)

I'm going to use that rule to annoy someone very soon.
Reshuffle please.
Again.
Again.
Reshuffle.
Reshuffle again.
Again please.
One more time.
Okay, now shuffle.
Good. Now shuffle again...

that's ok, the counterpoint to that convention is that if you're a dick about it, your opponent can punch you in the throat.
