I may be wrong but this are the problems I see with Geth, Lord of the Vault:
1) he costs :mana4::manab::manab: good luck casting him on turn 6.
2)You can't use his artifact ability unless there is a legal artifact to target, and then you can only use :manax: equal to that card's cmc. Try anything else and the ability is countered due to no legal targets.
3)His ability mills X for :manax:+:manab: when I can pay :manau: to mill 5 or :mana0: to mill 13 cards. It's not an efficient and/or consistent win con to use him as mill
...Really that's it for downsides :\
perhaps if you're running :manab:/:manag: and using him solely for the fact that he's a 5/5 more or less unblockable with one off artifact steal as a nice bonus it could work for a support/big creature; but I just can't see him as a card to build around: only a card to support others
then again you're talking to me about deck building and I suck at deck building :(

There are basically three ways in which a creature can be powerful.
Utility - Geth's theft ability is unreliable because it depends entirely on your opponent's deck. You can't abuse it. It could be nice but it's not going to be the reason you play Geth.
Beatdown - He does have evasion, but six mana is way too much to spend for this function. Well, green could swing it but then green has more efficient options at that mana level.
Finisher - A control deck likes to have a few killer creatures, and it's okay for them to be pricey since it can make the game last that long. What it wants in a finisher is power, evasion, and some resilience against removal (a classic if dated example: Morphling). Geth has the size and evasion, but lacks defense against removal (except from Doom Blade). He could be passable in this role, but not ideal.
So overall Geth is a cool and flavorful card that isn't terrible, but strategically he's nothing special.

Geth is awesome, he's beacon of Unrest on a stick. His mana cost however makes him a very useful card in slower formats like multiplayer and EDH/singleton but worthless in competitive 1 on 1.
I love cards like geth, they end up being cheap because they are not competitive in tournament formats and still they are killer in the formats I love most.
