Gaze of the Gorgon

Is it possible to run color protection from Gaze of the Gorgon to avoid a board wipe or does it behave like a wrath type effect?

protection would not change anything as the effect is not targeted

well...unless you add green or black protection on the opponent's creature as an instant, making the Gaze fail since it has no legal target.
