Should be Simple....

My 4/4 creature has Lifelink....my opponent blocks with a 1/1

Do I get 4 life (potential damage) or only 1 life (max defense of blocker)?

you get the 4 life. whatever the attacking strength of the creature is with lifelink, you get that back in life when attacking/blocking with said creature. it also applies with pumps i believe. i.e. you giant growth wurmcoil, you get 9 life back

During combat each creature deals however much damage his power is at. It doesn't matter what the defending creature's toughness is at. Your 4/4 deals 4 damage no matter what (unless a spell or affect prevents any of that damage). Your opponent's 1/1 takes 4 damage, dies, and you gain the life.

Uau i have been playing in tornments with odd judges then

i have played since a little boy and always i have gained life of lifelink equal to the defense of blocking creature, since attacking creature should be only be able to designate so much damage , as blocking creature resistance!

Every day we learn!!!
