Anyone got any M12 Drafting advice

Hey guys

I'm going to an M12 draft this friday and I would like to optimize my chances of winning. I don't draft often and I didn't go to any M12 events so far so I'm pretty new to the set. I did look over the cards to identify potential bombs and color/card combinations.

does anyone care to share some advice? Am I right to presume I should stay away from green (unless I draft Garruk) and that black and white are the strongest colors of the set?

cheers

Don't draft for money value... However if you find a mythic, use it, as they are amazing in limited format. Never go mono colored, and try not to go Tri colored. Choose your colors by the end of the first pack. Depending on your style (aggro, control, etc) your goung to need low mana cost blockers, or a few kill spells.

My prerelease experience:
Red, Blue, and Green were beast at my prerelease, and everyone ran at least one of those colors. Most of the time Rites of Florashing killed my friend, so if you are running that, take it out against people running Jace's Erasure, unless you too are running it.

I'm not new to drafting just looking for m12 specific insights. what spells did you underestimate? what did you overrate? that kind of stuff.

I put together a sloppy Stompy, because they're notoriously good for draft. However the decks that gave everyone (including me) trouble were the ones with Gideon's Avenger and Lawkeeper. Avenger surprised me how much better it was than I already thought it was going to be. The card's a monster.

Grand Abolisher was quite frankly overpowered in the draft setting...so grab him if you can.

Black kinda got the shaft it seems, so I would avoid it at least for draft. Zombie Infestation is really good, and so is the titan obviously, but still...=/

Oh, and Jace's Archivist is a MONSTER, especially with already small decks in draft

Furyborn Hellkite was a coin toss. The deck that used it either killed the opponent 5 times over, or didn't play a thing and lost horribly. Bloodthirst is good though, I was surprised how good THB.

IF, and it's a big if, someone plays a Sorin's Vengeance...that person wins, every time.

Carnage Wurm needs to be dealt with or you will lose, so keep track of who has it, and be ready for it.

Druidic Satchel is a pain in the ass. Whoever has it will be a pest. It's versatile, and as you probably know, versatility in draft is powerful.

I think that's about it...Good luck! :D

I underestimated control and underestimated MILL in limited. Acidic Slime saved my backside by destroying a mind control that had my grave titan, however, I overestimated green in general... Without mana ramp it didn't help much. I really wish I could go back and run Blue Black, I would have done so much better.

My casual group has a draft with every set that comes out. I was looking over the cards and was thinking possibly going :manau::manaw: control, or :manag::manaw: stuff. Probably gonna stay away form red. might splash if i get titan but other that that i prob won't.

Green white has been real good. Red is pretty nice as well.

Giddeon's lawkeeper definitely did a lot for me in every game he came out.
The new hydra that doubles every turn was a beating too. My friend got that in one of his decks and everytime he used it he won I think.

Thanks guys, that was useful!!

surewhynot: cheers mate, I appreciate the insight. I'm confused about you thinking black isn't good. It has removal which wins games, gravedigger and a few bombs. I'll look it the cards again, maybe I misjudged and should not be so eager to jump into it at the draft, though I'm very likely to splash it for removal.

White does seem like the powerhouse though I can't really take Grand Abolisher all that serious in limited. It kills combat tricks sure, and I'm sure it's a pain but there's not all that much you want to do in your opponent's turn that you can't do in your own turn if you really have to, at least that's what I was thinking. Bad players loose to combat tricks but good players usually see most stuff comming.

Try4se: How can you underestimate mill? It's usually the best clock in limited due to the slowness of the format. Ever since Lorwyn merfolk mill has been insane in limited. Now if someone has Jace you can pretty much pack your stuff and go home. In limited that is.

It might have just been luck of the draw (or lack there of), but in my pre-release nobody really had any luck with Black. Maybe I'm just spoiled from what NP brought Black =P. Yeah removal is nice, but white and blue had that as well. I agree Abolisher will be "meh" in other settings, but he was pretty annoying in draft.

Gonna be doing a casual draft this weekend, first one in 2 years, so I was pretty happy to find this thread =)

It's good for me to see how the cards operate in Limited since when I went through the spoiler I had my casual constructed goggles on.

I'm not sure why I was dubious about Gideon's Avenger but the more i think about it the more it seems like a potential power house...and now I'm thinking it'll be a must have for my soldier deck.

as for the Abolisher, I was viewing it's worth less in regards with combat tricks and more in relation to counter spells. So it's definitely an anti-blue card but I also see it as potentially slowing the opponent's tempo, making them play their instants on their turn rather than saving the mana for my turn to keep their options open.

I love mill, and am just biased, also I didn't pull enough cards that I thought would be useful enough to make one.

Yeah we have to do with the packs we get. I doubt I'll be going for mill unless I open Jace. I played mill in limited during lorwyn block and then again last year with allies when I drafted Halimar Excavator. Good times.

I tried a draft simulator yesterday but it must have been a very bad one as it let me draft an insane white weenie list with red support and kept on passing Benalish Veteran. I drafted like 5 Benalish Veterans which is so unlikely. If I would really draft that deck I think I would win with ease. I had tons of control, fast beatdown, one big fat dragon as a finisher, them Swiftfoot Boots, artifact removal, enchantment removal, that stupid good protection from creatures enchantment etc...
