Deck Challenge: Goryo's Vengeance

Hey guys

I'm interested in Goryo's Vengeance on Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Seems like a powerful play but tricky to implement and to make competitive. I'm interested to see what people here can come up with.

The deck doesn't have to be tier 1 but it should be competitive. You don't have to play either key card 4 times, wishing and/or tutoring for a combo piece is fine. It would be nice too if the deck has alternative win conditions (for instance dark depths combo would fit the colors and living wish would make both strategies better).

PS: I has to be legacy legal so no Survival of the Fittest unfortunately (which would be the easiest way to go about it I guess)

good luck

Ded (restraining Wards... yet again); "Would you just stay still... ahem, sorry, Wards being an ass again, so sorry. He did have a point though. There is a problem with using Goryo's Vengeance on Emrakul, the Aeons Tornand the fact is you can't due to Emrakul's ability "When Emrakul is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner shuffles his or her graveyard into his or her library." As Goryo's Vengeancecan only target a legendary creature in your graveyard and Emrakul can't be put into a grave, this "combo" won't work."

On the contrary, it can be put into a graveyard, but once there is shuffled back into its owner's library. If you hit it with an instant (hint, hint) it can be targeted before the shuffle trigger goes off.

My favorite combo with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, in graveyard, is Nihil Spellbomb.
It's so beautiful, it brings a tear to my eye.

this is not for kiddies mate :) Triggered abilities can be responded to by instants, Emrakul's graveyard ability is a triggered ability that uses the stack, Goryo's Vengeance is an instant, you do the math. Just make it work mate!

Thanks for the response! I had hoped most would know how it works by now when I posted this.

Not as sweet as extirpate but it sure does the trick :)

I've seen this done in the :manab:/:manag: 'aggro-reanimator' decks floating about, usually alongside Iona, Shield of Emeria, and sometimes the Necrotic Ooze combo kill.

I think a minimal shell of this could work best in them, perhaps two copies of Goryo's Vengeance and a single copy of Emrakul, the Aeons Torn.

I think it will work best in an aggro shell where you use Emrakul/Goryo's combo as a sweeper more then a finisher. Unlike traditional reanimator Goryo only gives you a one swing shot, that's 15 damage but if you do it turn one you don't really gain anything from annihilator. It will cost you a bunch of cards to set it up and you gain very little, 15 damage with nothing to follow that up doesn't cut it.
On the other hand if you have an agressive shell and you do the Emrakul/Goryo's combo lets say turn 3 or 4, you basically sweep your opponent and end the game either by damage or by simple land destruct and setting him back several turns from which there is no way to recover.
So the deck should actually feature Emrakul/Goryo's as a secondary attack to follow up an agressive start. At least that's what I'm currently thinking.

That's about how it shapes up, the deck in question is essentially survival 2.0. Generally a game is dictated by how fast of a Vengevine fueled alpha strike, or assemble the Necrotic Ooze kill.

The variants that have more of a focus on reanimation than the combo would generally accept it quite gently, so it's just a matter of what to drop. It'd also allow some interesting shenanigans with silver bullet tactics, namely bringing out Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite in response to a Dredge player bringing out Flame-Kin Zealot.

Ironically that's close to what I want on the sleeves for the deck, but I was going to use Troll Dad XD

Well, I did a quick version for the challenge. It's straight forward, uses a compact shell of the combo, and it is incredibly user friendly.

:manab:/:manag: "Jericho" tweaked for the challenge
