Question about Duress

So while playing a quick match, I played Duress against my opponent to look at his hand and make him discard a nonland noncreature card. Once I played that, he immediately played an unsummon and returned one of my creatures to my hand... before i was able to look at his hand. I was under the impression that once I played my Duress to look at his hand, he would have to show me then and there unless he played something to counter my duress... but instead he played an instant from his hand to target a creature of mine rather than countering my spell. It just seems to make sense that if I played duress to look at his hand, he would have to either do something about it, or reveal his hand like the card states... Not play another spell, and then turn his hand over.

Thoughts?

your opponent doesn't have to reveal his hand until duress resolves and he can cast any instant in reaction to you casting duress, it doesn't have to be something that counters or affects the duress.
