Ruling question on Golgari Rot Farm/ Boros Garrison/ other ravinca nonbasic lands

Golgari Rot Farm enters the battlefield tapped.
When Golgari Rot Farm enters the battlefield, return a land you control to its owner's hand.

My question is if there are no lands on the battlefield under my control can i still play golgari rot farm or does there have to be a land on the battlefield to play it?

I believe you have to have a land already in play inorder to play that land since returning a land is one of the requirements in playing it. Those type of lands are perfect in conjunction with the new lands from Zendikar that have their own abilities like you gain 2 life or opponent looses two life when the land enters the battlefield.

You could play it with no other lands in play, but it would have to target itself so you would essentially be wasting your land placement for the turn.
