Dispel + Redirect

Question:

Lets say I cast Dispel, then cast Redirect, changing the target of Dispel to Redirect. What happens? Does the game just freeze up or end because of a targeting paradox?

Dispel counters Redirect.

It doesn't break magic, the counter well...countered something, the redirect redirected something, and everything's been resolved.

No this is not what happens.

When Redirect begins to resolve, it is removed from the stack
The abilities on redirect trigger
You may change Dispel's target.
There are no new legal targets because

* A spell cannot target itself
* A spell cannot be targeted while it is not on the stack
* Redirect is not on the stack because it is resolving

There is a legal target for Redirect. It resolves normally.
There is no new legal target for Dispel. It fizzles and does nothing.

Note: Redirect's effect is optional, if Dispel has a target, you don't have to change it.

Thanks. I was curious about that. So a spell can't counter iteself is what you are saying?

Official rulings for Redirect:
08/15/2010
If you cast Redirect targeting a spell that targets a spell on the stack (like Cancel does, for example), you can't change that spell's target to itself. You can, however, change that spell's target to Redirect. If you do, that spell will be countered when it tries to resolve because Redirect will have left the stack by then.
