Brave the Elements Vs. Counter

I cast a white creature, my opponent plays cancel, in response I play brave the elements and pick blue. Can he still counter my creature?

He cancels the creature BEFORE it comes into play, meaning it's strictly a spell and not a creature. Sure you can give your creatures pro-blue, but he's not even a creature at this time.
