NOOB -Colorless Mana...
It was clairified to me that colorless mana is itself its own color and you have to use land cards as needed to cover costs. Why is it then that I see rated decks in standard that have no lands that give colorless? How many special lands are you allowed/suggested in a standard 60 deck?

you were misinformed. Colorless mana can be paid with mana of any of the 5 colors. The number of lands and non basic lands you run depend entirely on the type of deck you run.

Colorless mana is simply mana that isn't associated with a color.
Colorless mana can be used for costs like :mana1:, :mana2:, :manax:
Colored mana is used for the costs :manaw:, :manau:, :manab:, :manar:, :manag:; but can also be used for :mana1: :mana2:
Colored mana can be used as colorless, but colorless cannot be used as colored.
A Mountain produces :manar:, which can be spent as either :manar: or :mana1:
A Buried Ruin produces :mana1:, which can only be spent as :mana1:
Generally, you don't need as much colored mana as you think you do because many cards are like Carnage Wurm, only one color symbol is needed and the rest can be payed for with anything else.
