If you're searching your library, can you play it for free or do you still have to pay its mana cost?

you have to pay the mana cost. Every spell you play requires you to pay the mana cost of the spell unless stated otherwise. There is no mention of not paying for the spell here.

If you could play the Wurm for free from the library every deck in the world would play 4 of them.

Turn 1, play Misty Rainforst, pay 1 life, tap fetch Island, sneak in a free 9/5 Trample and keep mana open for Spell Pierce. That would be utterly insane.

To be fair, I am sure that the majority of decks wouldn't have them, simply because the card would be banned in every format ever created.
