Circle of Flame question

I have a question regarding circle of flame. :)

If I had one of these out on the board and I was attacked by a 1/1, would I still take the damage?

I would essentially become a XX/1 player?

Or would the act of choosing to attack kill off the creature before they got anywhere near combat?

I've been playing it the second way due to the keywords but I just wanted to make sure I was 100% correct. :)

No, any attacking creature with toughness of 1 would be killed before the combat damage step.

Circle of Flame Has a triggered ability which will trigger once attackers are declared and would resolve before the creatures got a chance to do damamge
