lightwielder paladin debate

me and my buddy are disputing this card. Now his effect says whenever lightwielder deals combat damage to a player you may exile target black or red permanant that player controls. Now does this work when me or him is defending while our cratures are in the battle phase? or only does that work when he or me takes direct damage from battle to my life points? cause it clearly says PLAYER!!!!
