Standard Format

I need confirmation on this: is Standard Constructed Format the basic tournament rules used as the defult? Essentially I'm asking if this rule set is the most popular or most played.

I'm new to the game along with a handful of friends. So I'm curious as to which sets can used based on what the M:tG community is playing as a whole.

If the answer is yes then that would mean my friends and I are only able to use Core 2010, the Zendikar Block and The Shard of Alara block when making our decks is this also correct?

Thank you kindly for any response.

Typically, yes. If you're interested in getting started with competitive magic, check out your local shop's Friday Night Magic (FNM). What format they run is up to them but in my experience most are either Standard Constructed or Standard Limited (Draft or sealed deck) or they will run both on different days of the week. Pro magic has a set schedule with the formats that will be played announced ahead of time, the 2010 schedule has been posted here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/other/081109a

So in other words I shouldn't bother with Extended. Seems kind of limiting doesn't it?

Well from the link:

Pro Tour–San Juan 2010: The qualifier season begins January 2 and the format is Extended.

Pro Tour–Amsterdam 2010: The format is Extended and Booster Draft.

And as I said, your local shop may run an Extended tourney. If not, maybe try to drum up some interest. Certainly play whatever you find fun.
