Can someone explain this to me?

OK. i played magic for like three years an than quit and my friend just got me back into it and there is so much new crap i dont get. i need a explanation of the changling rule because since its all creature types wouldnt that make it a wall automatically and than it cant attack. also we recently had a debate on if you block with a creature and its going to die from the damage can you use its abilities if it makes you sac it and still deal damage? or does the sac make the damage go away? and i just want some opinions on this. my buddy and i play the game shandalar all the time, thats for all you old school magic players who remember playing that computer game. but we both dont get why the made planeswalkers some of them are just so good its ridiculous.we dont play with them i wanna know are the banned or anything?thanks

i strongly recommend the "planeswalker primer" videos on youtube...they cover the basic mechanics and every single keyword. worth watching even for experienced players.

the video on combat should cover your questions about the timing surrounding abilities, blocking and combat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2d55FQgut1E

no, planeswalker cards are not banned.

as for changeling turning creatures into Defender(the new term for 'wall'):
Defender/Wall is not a creature type, it is a static ability, like Flying or First Strike.
creature types are what is listed after 'Creature' in the small section between the card's image and it's abilities/flavour textbox. examples: goblin, soldier, wizard, rogue.

thanks Seras, that kinda hurts as an old school player that they got rid of the wall creature type. its like they are trying to make the game for dummies you know? like now instead of bury they actually spell out that it cant be regenerated. i still think planeswalkers are dumb and way to good

they didn't get rid of walls, they just renamed the ability to be a bit clearer and more intuitive.

while it may seem like a lot has changed the game certainly isn't "dumber"...they've just refined the mechanics and simplified/clarified some things that weren't so smooth.

overall the game is a lot more balanced and it has less broken interactions....give it some time and approach it with an open mind, it'll grow on you =)

(used to play back in the Legends/Fallen Empire era, just got back into the game this summer and loving it)
