How far back does modern go?

Whats the oldest edition I can play with in modern? I never knew where the cut off was. I believe it's what the border of the card is like that makes it modern, is that correct? In other words, what makes it modern and what's the edition it stops being modern?

and wow they banned ponder, preordain, and rite of flame from it, I love all three of those cards, i use them alot, if i make any of my decks modern ill have to change them up a bit
