Is It Worth It?

I'm trying to make a good red and green aggro deck to compete with. Is buying huntmaster of the fells worth it? I have some money, but first I want to make sure it's worth buying a playset... I'd really appreciate any replies. The card looks awesome and does a lot of good stuff, but I could do a lot with $60...just making sure it's a good investment :)

Well, really that's up to you man, but personally I would say yes. You can make an EPIC deck with him. I would recommend combining him with the following(I'm going to stick to cards that qualify for Standard format so you can use the deck at FNM for a good while to come).

================================
+ Put 4 of any non-basic lands in your deck that produce both Red and Green. This is the best way to help ensure you don't get "mana drought" of one color or the other.

+ "Arbor Elf": A one drop that helps you get the most out of your green mana which aside from obvious benefits will make the next card in my list really easy to get out.

+ "Conjurer's Closet": An artifact(so you can use both your red & green mana) that lets you blink Huntmaster each turn thus getting the most out of his 2/2 wolf tokens and his life gain ability.

+ "Parallel Lives": Permanent Enchantment that doubles the number of tokens Huntmaster(and any other token producer you may have) will put out each time he enters the battlefield. Plus, they stack, so if you have 2 that means 4 tokens. If you have 3 that means 8 tokens, and if you have all four "Parallel Lives" out that means ONE Huntmaster will be spitting out 16 freaking 2/2 wolf tokens each turn that you blink him with "Conjurer's Closet"!

+ "Champion of Lambholt": A 3 drop creature that gets a +1/+1 counter for every creature that enters the battlefield under your control(think about that combined with the token factories I mentioned above), AND if you get it relatively powerful you essentially render your opponents creatures useless for blocking.

=================================================

Hope I helped give you some ideas, and showed how valuable Huntmaster really can be. Peace. :D

Thanks for replying, you have some very good points. :) I'll definitely consider every one of the cards you mentioned (except maybe arbor elf...you need a forest for him to work, and if I'm running 4 rootbound crags he might end up useless some games so I'll stick to birds for now) and especially champion of lambholt. I was planning on running hound of griselbrand, strangleroot geist, and wolfir silverheart, and they can all benefit the champion, whether it's by undying and entering twice or by soulbinding to raise the power and make blockers useless. As for the huntmaster, I'll be ordering a playset on pay day. :)

Glad I could help. Yeah, you are right about "Arbor Elf". He's not as good as say, "Birds of Paradise" or "Llanowar Elves" for mana production. I just recommended "Arbor Elf" since both Birds and Llanowar are M12 and will cycle out of Standard format in October. :(

Anyway....good luck with your deck. Looks like it'll be a good one!

It's okay, I'm sure birds will be reprinted in RTR. It's always reprinted lol. Thanks again! :)
