The Epidemic

I'm sorry to say it, but the Vault is falling apart. I became a member of this site 3 years ago, and have been coming here almost daily ever since. I have had an amazing experience here creating decks, and discussing strategy.

Lately however, i have seen a massive influx on pure nonsensical garbage.
like:

http://www.mtgvault.com/generalm/decks/generalm-read-the-description/

http://www.mtgvault.com/xxxeleshnornxxx/decks/deck-of-the-unthinkable/

http://www.mtgvault.com/chaplin/decks/thats-right-i-went-there/

http://www.mtgvault.com/crartpants/decks/money-is-no-object/

http://www.mtgvault.com/coleander20/decks/turn-zero-win/
(how many flash hulk decks does the site really need? c'mon..)

http://www.mtgvault.com/voltage/decks/super-eggs/
(adding moxes to an already established deck, doesn't make it awesome or "super" or cool..)

and the list goes on and on..

Its truly driving me insane. Its at the point where coming to the Vault does nothing but disappoint me. Maybe i'm being selfish, or narrow minded, but it seems like a wave of children who have been playing magic for about a month have swarmed the Vault. Its a plague, and its viciously spreading.

You want to know who started down voting comments on "That's right i went there"? It was me, and i am proud of it. I am not afraid of admitting to defending the site i have proudly supported for years. To be fair, after i started down voting comments, i guess other people realized it was a great way to throw a wrench in the wheels of this disease that's infecting the vault. Because quickly the entire decks comments were down voted, and not entirely by me.

Just today I down voted every comment on "Hobo Elves" and i feel zero remorse. Decks like this, that are literally unplayable, have absolutely no merit, and no meaning for existing. These decks are literal wastes of space, and time.

Feel free to ban me. I can guarantee you that i have been a greater asset to this community than any of these scrubs creating trash over the last few months.

These decks have been around forever, I mean take a look at this deck from 2007:

I think what you need to work out is what you actually want from Vault? All we've changed is the homepage, the old pages are still there... Maybe we need to make it easier to find what you want. I mean, how did you search for decks and find decks you wanted to comment on in the past? Would a personalised homepage fix this?

Regarding reasons, is this all because of the hot page? Summer break? MTG is now popular to a much broader audience (xbox etc)? I dunno..

I'm pretty sure downvoting every comment on a deck only adds to our troll problem to be honest.

I appreciate that you've been here for a long time and I don't doubt you've contributed an awful lot in the past, but downvoting because you don't agree with what somebody else has created on their own personal account? I don't really understand...

We are working on the troll situation and will be spending the next two days discussing and implementing fixes for it.

Gary is right. Downvoting is only making it worse. And Ian makes a good point that decks like these have been around for a long while. The main problem is that now there is a "Hot" page as the default. This just gives the attention hungry trolls an outlet to measure themselves and do their best to take over by saying "Look at me, i made a useless thing on a network to elevate myself and others like me". My bookmark to get to MTGVault takes me to the "New" page. I bypass the bull. I understand that the "Hot" page was originally made to make the Vault look less stale and more fresh, but so far it is a domain of attention whores and gossip mongers. I just don't know what can be done right other than to keep calm and ignore them.

Morado1313 makes a good point. MTG Vault bookmark changed to "new decks" tab.

@Ian-
Sure, its true that these decks have been around forever. But not a new one every day. and the old troll decks didn't get over a hundred comments on them either.

What i want out of MTG Vault is to be able to come here and see creative deck ideas/ combos, to discuss tactics, to give and receive advice on tournament decks/play, and to consistently become a more well rounded and well versed magic player.

Unfortunately for me, next to no one on this site takes magic serious anymore. Yes its a game, and its about having fun, but its also about strategy, and winning.

Now this leads into Gary's reply. You don't understand how i can be upset over what someone did on their personal account. - I don't understand how you forget that this is a social site. What one person does on their personal account effects everyone. When i log in to the vault and all i see is troll decks with 50+ comments, how does that not effect the entire community?

It has become a battle for the "hot decks" page. I can't count the amount of users that have 500-1000 comments, but when you actually look at their comments its nothing but "Cool deck, check out my blahblahblah"

Its nonsensical and a waste of everyone's time.

I used to be able to come here, click on the "legacy" or "modern" tab and be gravy. Now there is about 1 legacy deck a month, and the modern decks have 0-3 comments on them. No one is actually using the site anymore. All anyone wants is attention, and the "hot decks" tab is doing nothing but creating a very very false sense of interaction.

http://www.mtgvault.com/decks/new/?tag=modern

i mean come on.. 16 decks, with a combined total of 9 comments..

http://www.mtgvault.com/decks/new/

Look at how empty the "new decks" tab is. 0 comments, 0 comments, 0 comments, allll the way down.

Now i don't claim to know the reason for why this is happening. Nor do i know what could fix it. All i know is i'm disappointed that i'm losing one of my favorite sites.

I guess ill just ignore it all, and move on. If children want to waste their time then so be it.

Alleywayjack I see your point (though I don't think mass downvoting does anything to solve the problem) and I think the main problem is that the new decks take a background to the hot decks and aren't even partially visible on the front page without clicking into a new tab. I think the problem would be toned down if we had say a time limit of 24 hours on the hot page as well as having the new decks shown on the front page instead of the hot decks (though I'm afraid the hot decks page would be essentially nonexistent if that happened). The main problem is that nobody sees the new decks and people with alternate accounts will always have advantages in the spotlight.

By the way Hobo Elves I think is a legit deck, just a strange way of running Charbelcher. But really, just be patient and remember that Gary and Ian have been working very hard on the site and are working on this issue right now instead of being bad admins who ignore the problems.

Thanks racky. You're right, we are always trying to sort out the issues that crop up. It is never our intention to mess anything up or piss people off, why would we do that?!

This was never an issue before we put the hot page live but we were only trying to please other users who HAD asked for some form of top decks page. We figured this could only make the site seem more active to new users, so they would sign up and get involved too. I guess we were wrong because now we've just caused this new mess!

alleywayjack, the reason new decks are less active is because they are not on the homepage anymore. Honestly though, it was hardly a hive of activity when they were on the homepage which is why we made the switch in the first place. Also, 16 decks tagged with the modern keyword in the last 24 hours isn't that small of a number... If you want to find older modern decks then you can use the deck search.

We are going to write some tools in the next couple of days to deal with trolls, that's step one. After that, I'm open to ideas...

Ok, I dont really care all that much, but i am curious..

I had over a 1000 comments last night, and today when i logged in i have 870.
I checked all my old comments and i didn't get down-vote trolled..
So i'm pretty much clueless.
