First 1!....ever
Basically what i do in draft is look at the rare i get in my first pack, if it sucks i look to see if any of the uncommans are better. The first card i choose is what i base my deck around, no questions asked. It makes things a lot easier and if the cards you choose after your first work well with it then you are usually doing pretty good so far.
Also, if you notice that players are passing on specific types of cards, like exalted, artifact, goblin, you start taking them. It increases your chances of creating a "smooth deck" and the chances of getting cards you need.

Going with the first card isn't always the best choice. I choose what looks to be best for any deck and pay attention to what is passed. If you have a good memory and figure out what colors are being played, you have a better chance of making a better deck.
I once played a draft where four of the seven participants chose white (one chose pure white) in their deck. Two played red and everyone else was passing red.
If everyone is playing white and you chose white for the frist card, would you still play it?

hell's to the no. However, in my defense, the first card you choose can't be an educated choice because you don't see what other people start pulling until at least 4-5 passes and the if the card i first chose was worth more than 5$, i would take it withought a second thought, and i was talking about the first pack you open, not the second or third, when nobody even knows what deck they would play. In fact i said something along the lines about paying attention to what was being passed...

pretty similar to...

But, i agree more with the color noticing than the card type. When everybody started passing me the artifacts at the shards draft, i made an artifact deck. Which went 3-1 and i won 6 packs. and know i see that the artifact passing was actually just a rare conveniance.
In a draft tournement i would listen to Masta Moore and start looking for the colors being taken/passed.

I agree. But just choosing the first card and go for it is a bad choice in some scenarios and I thought that you meant that you were building the deck around the first choice. My mistake =)

i also felt it was best to go for 2 colors, so i look for the best setup for the best card in my pack to work with another color, having a healthy knowledge of whatever set your playing with is the best option, then you can know what to expect and choose more wisely based on what you can expect to come and what you can expect everyone else to take before you have the oppurtunity
