Deck Description

In a world of menacing creatures and powerful planeswalkers, the most dangerous criminals can't be confined by any ordinary prison.

There's only one stronghold fit for the job...
Grenzo's Dungeon Palace Extraordinaire!

This asylum for the depraved holds the world's most obnoxious cretins, notorious assassins and ruthless warriors.

Like the strong only bow to greater strength, so do the cruel only bow to greater cruelty. With this motto Grenzo has managed to assemble a team of infernal wardens to guard the Dungeon's denizens.

Can the Dungeon Palace hold? Or will its horrors be unleashed on the world once more?

How to Play

This is a 1v1 Commander deck. I tried to avoid adding too many non-creature spells so you have a higher chance of finding creature's with Grenzo's abillity. The flashback sorceries help minimize the loss of missing with Grenzo.

I also wanted to keep the deck entirely in the modern frame. There are many useful cards out there that are in the original frame that could power-up the deck (Starke of Rath+Homeward Path is powerful and would fit in nicely with the theme I was going for), especially if you want to go the Goblin tribal route.

The value plays:

Grenzo: If you want to be agressive and have no 3cmc plays you can play him on turn 3 for x=1 so you can get the most value out of his abillity. The only creatures he won't be able to resurrect will be Ashling and Flayer of the Hatebound (4 power). Otherwise play him on turn 4 for x=2.

Scry, Clash and Hideaway lands: Put your creatures on the bottom of the library if you have a Grenzo on the field or if you don't need them immediately so you can set-up for Grenzo's abillity.

Buried Alive: Bloodghast/Squee/Anger or Bloodghast/Gravecrawler/Tymaret if you need a sac outlet+repeatable sac fodder. (imagine if you have a Viscera Seer on the board: play a land, get Bloodghast, Sac Bloodghast for Tymaret, play Tymaret. Now you can Scry 1 and get a death trigger for 1B with Gravecrawler)

Frenzied Goblin, Whispersilk Cloak, Shizo, Rogue's Passage: These help to get your guys through to trigger their abilities. (Master of Cruelties, Ashling, Throat Slitter, Pain Seer)

Reito Lantern+Grenzo+Sac Outlet+any ETB creature: Recurrable ETB effects and creature recursion for 5C

Squee: He has two functions in the deck, Sacrifice fodder and Discard fodder. Have a Rummaging Goblin? You're drawing an extra card each turn. Have Rix Maadi or Stronghold Rats? The symmetrical Discard isn't that symmetrical anymore.

Wort: Much like Squee she helps minize the effects of the symmetrical discard in your favor and recurs your goblins. Her and Warren Weirding give you access to a Cruel Edict effect each turn for 1C1B.

Kiki-Jiki: You know him, you love him. He slices, he dices, he makes all your dreams come true. Need an ETB effect? Kiki has your back. Need something to Sacrifice? Kiki's your man. Want an instant win combo? Just pair him up with Zealous Conscripts and go to town.

Weaknesses of the deck:

This deck has a difficult time dealing with enchantments. Because I didn't go Goblin tribal or add Mana Echoes you can't have the crazy agressive starts or "play the entire deck out of nowhere combo". This means that quick decks can pose a challenge.

As with any deck that has graveyard interactions and combo pieces: Graveyard exile, counterspells, and Grenzo getting tucked away are all effective ways to disrupt you.

Advantages of the deck:

Grenzo is a very modular general. You can have strong draws that curve out and be the agressor. Or you can start with gaining advantage through Grenzo and stabilize with your control options. You'll never end up with too much Mana and too little to do, since Grenzo is a great mana sink.

Giving up the over-reliance on Goblin tribal has a plus side; you have a much more resilient late-game and control potential. The discard potential of the deck improves your match-up against control decks.

Deck discussion for Grenzo's Dungeon Palace

You can remove some of your less useful creatures to add in a few mana rocks. This will help you speed up in ramping and get more counters on your general.

Thank you for the response. I thought about adding rocks (Sol Ring is obviously amazing, but we decided against playing it in my playgroup). I'll test around a bit with some rocks and see if I can get mileage out of them.
