Deck Description

This deck was originally meant to be anti- white knight decks, with lots of black first strikers and massive -1/-1 counters to proliferate everything down. However, it quickly evolved into a fatty infect deck. Vatmothers are epic, as are Crusaders and Skittles. The counters system still plays a big roll in the deck, but is less of a focus if you have good creatures in hand:

Infect + BSZ + Contagion Clasp = big board control against small creatures, and a few extra poison counters

The Sword of Vengeance makes for massive haste infect swings after a BSZ wipe, and a few nice late-game fatties will help that along. I added Tainted Strike to make sure I get Infect, and Sign in Blood for card draw.

Comments on deck balance and sideboard, or any suggestions for additions/improvements?

I should add that this deck is really NOT anti-knights any more, although the counter spread is kinda cool. I have been crushed several times by good white knight decks; it's more about the big infect creatures.

Also, for a less infect-oriented approach, I'm designing a new deck based around big black creatures in the new set.

Deck discussion for In Blackest kNight

I personally love every creature that you play in this deck. But I am wondering why so many swords?
Don't get me wrong, I love it and the abilities it offers are awesome. 4 seems a bit much to me personally though.
You have so many big finishers without infect though. It would be a pain in the ass if you couldn't deal that last bit of infect damage. Did you give thought to Tainted strike?

I my experience I always found Vampire Hexmage a better sideboard card than mainboard card.
I can understand why you would play her though considering there are so many decks at the minute boasting multiple planeswalkers.
In my personal opinion I would drop the Hexmages to the sideboard playing 4 sign in blood's instead. The life lost this way is offset by running a set of Nighthawks. This would allow you to run 2 less swords and maybe put 2 tainted strikes in their place.

Wow thank you for the great advice. This is a deck that I'm still working on, so it could definitely use improvement. I was just looking to see if I could make a good mono-black deck, considering how black has been largely destroyed by Caw, SoFF, and Baneslayer Angel. I've been looking at some of the cards scheduled for Phyrexia, and I think the deck is actually going to shift away from infect, just focusing on big black baddies. (Phyrexian Chancellor instead of Vatmother, for instance).

The swords I love as a cheaper alternative to BM/FF, but very nice with this deck. I do need to work on the balance, but I originally had that many to ensure an early drop on a Vatmother. With a little tweaking and better deck filtering, I could reduce it though. I also originally looked at Phyresis (there's another weird replacement card coming up in Phyrexia), but tainted strike could work well too.

I'll sideboard the Hexmages, you're right they're just there for Planeswalkers, came off of an earlier build with lots of first strike. I need to work on the sideboard.

Supposing I were to shift away from infect (or not, I'll make a separate deck to work on that idea), what's your opinion on some of these in this deck?

Quest for the Gravelord - to get a big creature from killing early drops with counters

Soul Stair Expedition - graveyard return, don't know if I need it but maybe against BSZ / DoJ

The Sign in Blood I had though of....is there any other way to do card draw in mono black? If not, I guess that's the best option, and I think you're right it will help a lot.

If you are moving away from infect I think the deck needs to change a bit.
You will have to drop the Tainted strikes and possibly contagion clasps.
In their place I would use some sort of black control cards like Duress, Mire's Toll, Mind sludge, Inquizition of Kozilek. It's always good to look at your opponents hand and see what they might do next.

About the card draw: Sign in blood is probably the best bet for you at the minute. There is Dark Tutelage but you are running too many fatties and not enough life gain for that.
Outside of standard there are many awesome black draw spells. Phyrexian Arena is nice and fits the Phyrexian theme if you choose to run with it.
P.S. The Phyrexian Chancellor looks awesome!!!

Ok, so after trying things out with other deck ideas, I like some of the things I've seen...and I've decided to actually turn around and go back in the other direction :)

Gonna try to make this deck more infect-oriented for a faster trample kill, starting by taking out the Grave Titans so I can leave out Tainted Strike.
