Deck Description

Based off of the old-school deck build which utilized Ancient Tomb, Mox Diamond and Chrome Mox in order to quickly play Exalted Angel as well as the rest of the angels in the deck. I took the traditional approach from back then and spiced the deck up with some of the more modern power creep for tribal angels that has been established in Magic today. The major improvement made in this build has been the addition of several low costing, aggressive angels. Their presence allows you to quickly swarm the field and establish dominance over it immediately after performing the bread and butter combo in the deck: Summoning Exalted Angel and swinging with her at the opponent on turn two.

The sideboard here is self explanatory: Swap one or both of the Avacyns in the deck for a copy of any of the several other powerful legendary angels waiting in the wings- Akroma for anti black and red, a Baneslayer against Demons or Dragons, Linvala against activated abilities or you can just throw any mono colored deck the finger with Iona. Depending on the situation, more angels can be considered for substitutes, but these are the core angels that will be able to easily get over whatever may be the most annoying mechanic of an opponent.

Wrath of God and Armageddon are there to help take care of token or landfall/mana ramp decks. Fateful Absence can replace the Disenchantments which work as the secondary removal card in the main board, in case of any matchups against Planeswalker heavy decks. For extremely drastic measures, I have also kept Lightning Greaves in the sideboard, with a single copy of Platinum Angel to also add in and combo with them. It’s a rare combo to pull off, but it is entirely possible to create a Platinum Angel that has indestructible and shroud on the field given the correct combination of cards. Finally, for just a little bit of flavor, the Painter’s Servant is there just to successfully achieve the “Win More” condition of using Iona to shut down an opposing multi-colored deck.

This is the third and (hopefully) final major rework I have made to this deck since I began slowly constructing it when I started playing Magic in 2008.

How to Play

You will always want your opening hand to consist of an Ancient Tomb, two Plains (one if you want to risk having two draw into a second copy), Mox Diamond, Exalted Angel and any two other cards that you will be able to imprint the Chrome Mox on. Ideally, it would be a weaker angel you can play after Exalted Angel (Segovian, Youthful or Righteous) or either a Sword along with any high cost angel that you will not be able to play in your early game (Lyra or Avacyn)

From there, it will take two turns to set up and execute the combo.

Turn One: Imprint a Plains on Mox Diamond, then set it. After that, set Ancient Tomb as your land for the turn and tap it, dealing two damage to yourself and putting you at 18. This gives you one white mana and two colorless at your disposal. Use all three mana to play Exalted for it’s morph cost of three colorless. Afterwards, imprint your high cost card that will be not be making an appearance any time soon onto the Chrome Mox, that way you still have one mana floating on the field to use how you see fit. If you prefer presence and have a Segovian, summon it. If not, keep the Chrome Mox ready and prepped to be tapped. You can now end your turn confidently knowing that even if the opponent summons a creature that you don’t like on his first turn, you will be able to remove it with the Sword in hand.

Turn Two: Set your second Plains so you have a total of five mana at your disposal (A Plains, one white mana from Chrome Mox and another from Mox Diamond, along with the two your Ancient Tomb taps for) now pay four mana to flip Exalted angel over. The damage from the Ancient Tomb will now set you at 16, but you have gained 4/5 with flying and lifelink. Swing four at the opponent with Exalted Angel, which does not have summoning sickness since it has been on the field. This will set you up with a strong angel on turn two, as well as resetting your life back to it’s starting value of 20. Once you have popped this signature attack off, continue to ramp mana with the remaining copies of Chrome Mox and Mox Diamond so that you can summon more angels which will swarm the opponent, resulting in the win condition for this deck.
