Deck Description

Although this deck has a few creatures, it is intended to function basically as a creature-less black control/burn with Hecatomb as the central figure, in combination with Death Pits of Rath and Desolation (tap a swamp to deal damage, not "for mana", and keep your lands while your opponents lose theirs).

It is a slow, somewhat clunky combo deck - only good for casual play, but can be lots of fun!

This was my attempt back in the day at a more creative, non-creature based deck - certainly could use suggestions for ways to make it smaller, more tight and effective.

How to Play

The idea is to get an Ensnaring Bridge and/or No Mercy out as soon as possible to limit the damage you receive from creature attacks - some Ornithopters, a Tenacious Dead, or a Child of Night might help you block some attacks during the early rounds of the game, but don't worry if you take a few (smaller) hits while getting your combo into play.

As soon as possible, play a Sengir Autocrat and sacrifice it (and its servants) to play Hecatomb. (If you have enough creatures to play Hecatomb but don't have it in your hand, use a Tutor to get it - if you have Hecatomb but not enough creatures to play it, use a Tutor to get Sengir Autocrat.) Once Hecatomb is in play, use Tutors to get Death Pits of Rath and/or Desolation (or scry or wait for them). If you get this combo into play, and empty your hand to make Ensnaring Bridge effective, there isn't much your opponents can do while you burn them to death with Hecatomb.

All the other cards are intended to slow down your opponent and protect you from attacks (Terror, Doom Blade, Diabolical Edict, Evincar's Justice), do so and give you a few more points of life to carry on (Vicious Hunger, Spinning Darkness, Throne of Bone), accelerate your mana (Dark Ritual, Bubbling Muck, Culling the Weak) and scry to move along your game more smoothly (Lose Hope). Kormus Bell and Snake Basket are not ideal ways to get creatures to sacrifice for Hecatomb, but they could come in handy. The Nightmare and Sengir Vampire are included in case you need some decent sized creature to do damage or hold back an attack in case the combo fails.

Deck discussion for Hecatomb Combo

add 2 or 3 death pits. To me it looks to key for your deck to only have one of them. other then that the only advice i have is if you only have one coppy of a card in the deck do you realy need it? 60 cards is the key number.

Yes, I own 4 Death Pits. Sometimes I play with 2 or 3 in the library. I had reduced the number to one before because sometimes the deck was too slow. And you're right - especially for a combo deck, it is ideal to have it right at 60.
