Deck Description

deck made to combo varolz with death's shadow, but it has decent parity and removal to let you play around the enemy's strategy.

How to Play

1. use Grapple with the Past and fauna shaman to get varolz, corpsejack, and death's shadow out asap.

2. use varolz' and corpsejack's effects to salvage death's shadow onto another creature(hopefully lotleth troll) to give it 26 +1/+1 counters.

3. kill.

Abrupt decay, putrefy, and thoughtseize can be used to remove threats.
Try to keep a Blossoming defense on-hand for cases where you can't regenerate your big creature.

noxious revival can help you get back things that you lost to Grapple with the past, and enemy removal, or it can put useless cards on top of your enemy's deck.

If you can't get Lotleth out to put counters on, you'll want rancor on whatever you threw counters on.

The side board has maelstrom pulse for countering token engines, which normally give Lotleth trouble when he's trying to kill.

Deck discussion for Modern low-mana Varolz

Noxious revival is better than Treasured Find. Sure, it doesn't replace itself, but it can be cast for free and it can disrupt an opponent's top decks late game as well as returning a card that you need. I suggest running a few copies of Life from the Loam as it can act as both an engine and a way for you to get your lands back, which this deck is already a little light on.
I'm not sure of your budget, but cards like Maelstrom Pulse, inquisition of Kozilek, and abrupt decay will do dastardly things for you. Also fetch and shocklands are pretty cool.
I don't think you need four putrefy. Maybe try just one or two and fill the other two (three) spots with cards like dismember, disfigure, or victim of night.
Having at least one Urborg, tomb of Yawgmoth is a given for any deck playing black and another color and it will give you greater access to things like Treetop Village (which can put in some real mileage for you). I don't think you need four crypt of agadeem, maybe just one or two, it seems a little slow.
Personally, I would run Gravecrawler over deadly recluse, or, if money is an issue, Bloodsoaked champion. They both have excellent synergy with Lotleth troll and there's no harm in picking a fatter creature over them to Grisly Salvage.
I like your choice to run Death's shadow, but he can be a dead draw, maybe just two or three and include an extra land or two. Twenty is maybe too few. Try something like 22-24.

Overall, cool deck, but I think some of the tweaks I listed will help out a lot.

i think i might keep treasured find simply because, since it replaces itself it lets me play the card it pulled on the same turn.
grabbing 1 maelstrom pulse seems like a great idea though considering how this deck just wouldn't work against tokens.
and abrupt decay's strong early game removal is a great replacement for 2 of the putrefies.
i agree that uborg is a must, cant believe i overlooked it before.
as is treetop village.
the reason i wanna keep deadly recluse is just to cover my bases in case the opponent plays flying creatures that i don't want to bother removing or simply cant remove. i get that gravecrawler would synergize better, but i feel like i still might need recluse as that safety net.
i dropped a death's shadow for that maelstrom.
and 20 land actually seems to work out well, considering how low the cmc on my cards are, and the fact that i have cultivate, salvage, and treasured find just in case.

once i finish building it, ill have to keep an eye on how it plays to see if i need loam or gravecrawler
