Deck Description

So it seems to me like everyone is trying their hardest to crack the standard metagame post-M14 (and post rotation, for that matter.) I don't know a lot yet, but I do know a few things.

Young Pyromancer is amazing. I have a prediction that post rotation, every other deck you see will have Young Pyromancer in it. Whether it's Boros Blitz w/ Pyromancer, Izzet w/ Pyromancer, G/R Aggro w/ Pyromancer, heck Aristocrats: Act II w/ Pyromancer--decks are going to use Pyromancer. I played in an M14 prerelease this weekend and had the utter misfortune of seeing him combined with Chandra's Phoenix (and molten birth for that matter... oh god, the memories.) Young Pyromancer is a card. For real.

However, I think the best shell that the Pyromancer is going to fit into is a token shell. The G/W token deck has been on the rise lately as a fringe tournament deck. It's had a fair share of successes, but to me it's always seemed like it was missing something--like 2 colors was maybe too limiting. I think Young Pyromancer solves this problem in many different ways.

For one thing, most token decks use instants and sorceries over creatures to make their tokens. Thus, Young Pyromancer has his fun. Turn 2 Young Pyromancer. Turn 3 Call of the Conclave (plus elemental) and a Wake the Reflections (plus an elemental). You just put 8 power on the board on turn 3. That's crazy. Not only that, but the interaction between Young Pyromancer and Lay of the Land is also pretty cute.

Even better is the fact that splashing Red gives the token deck something it didn't have before--burn capabilities. The token deck instantly becomes more offensive when it can burn away opposing threats and swing uncontested with everything you've got.

And speak of swinging with everything you've got, have you taken a look at Gruul War Chant lately? Not only does it give all our creatures +1/+0 (which can be game-changing with multiple young pyromancers out), but it also gives all our creatures minor evasion, meaning they probably have to throw their value creatures in front of the onslaught and a lot of damage is still going to get through.

Archangel of Thune. The new gavony township. This angel is quite awesome. Not only does it make racing incredibly easy, but it powers up your entire army in the process. That's just cool.

Now, it's not that I'm poor, but I really just don't like dropping $150 on 3 cards. Therefore, Voice of Resurgence (except for one that I pulled) is being replaced for Wayfaring Temple. I don't think this omission is all that bad, honestly. With the way standard is right now, playing a voice doesn't gurantee me the elemental in anyway with rest in peace, pillar of flame, and essentially four different oblivion rings in standard. With wayfaring temple, it's a guranteed */* and also has the bonus of populating on a hit. I'm not horrified at the lack of VoR.

I think this deck has unbelievable standard potential, and I would love people's advice to make it better! I'm trying to avoid using innistrad cards (except for avacyn's pilgrim and pillar of flame because I don't think they have any replacement yet) to avoid getting screwed over by the rotation, but I don't think that will be a problem.

Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Deck discussion for Naya Tokens (Standard)

Hey, I was brainstorming something like this! As good as the deck looks, it looks like it gets hosed really badly by ratchet bomb, which will be coming in... To alleviate this, I think either Boros Charm in the sideboard or even mainboard would make an excellent inclusion- it has finishing power, saves your stuff from board wipe/ratchet bomb, and giving archangel of thune double strike feels good- maybe replace rootborn defenses with it? The other thing I noticed was Blind Obedience- Imposing Sovereign feels like a better fit for the beats.

I was just thinking about ratchetbomb earlier actually. I think if they sided in ratchet bomb my plan would be to side in 2 rootborn defenses as well as 2 ancient grudges (or gruul charm post rotation) although I forgot to put in the ancient grudge. I think I do like Boros Charm better though--definitely has way more potential, and the double strike lifegain would be awesome since it doubles the counters. I thought about imposing sovereign, but I eventually decided that any deck that I would board it in against would have removal to deal with it, where they wouldn't against blind obedience. The extort is another additional feature.

Thanks for the comment! Do you have a list posted for your idea for the deck? I'd love to check it out and get some ideas!

Any artifact destruction actually has no effect on ratchet bomb- the ability is done at instant speed and the effect goes on the stack. Most players will hold the bomb in their hand until the tokens reach a dangerous mass or they draw a second!

I didn't have a decklist, but I decided to make a post rotation deck. Note that both Krenko's Command and Gather the Townsfolk are leaving! The current options are Hive Stirrings and Molten Birth. While the potential to replay the card is nice, the restrictive cost on Molten Birth post-rotation is too much. For this reason, I went with Manaweft Sliver over Lay of the Land.

Something else to consider is Gruul War Chant- could make for a great finisher.

Gruul War chant is actually a great idea. Quite possibly even better than path of bravery. I'll playtest with both, but I get the feeling that the path isn't going to be as good as I want.

My idea was to ancient grudge the ratchet bomb in response to them activating the ability, and since it's a tap ability they can't re-activate and restack the ability. If they drew multiples in a game that would definitely be a problem, but I don't think they'd sideboard in more than 3 and with the 4 total rootborn defenses and then some artifact hate I don't think it would be that big of a problem.

I definitely would take Molten Birth over Hive Stirrings just because a) I like the buyback possibility and b) Lay of the Land is too good. This deck doesn't need a lot of acceleration--a turn 3 advent is not necessarily the main goal. But running 4 lay of the lands means that I only need to run at least 1 of each basic land and can run only 20-21 lands. Not only that, but at a lack of anything else in the one-drop slot (except shock which I probably want to save) it also does a great job mana-fixing if I draw a young pyromancer and no mountains or something like that.

Thanks again for the comment! I'll mess around with Gruul War Chant

Ratchet Bomb's ability works such that the sacrifice effect happens as part of the cost, not the ability itself. This means that when you would Ancient Grudge in response to activation, there is no longer an eligible target. And then, if you try to preemptively destroy it, then they can activate the ability and sacrifice the bomb in response. The best case that Ancient Grudge could get is making them use their ability early.

Post #12 covers this pretty well: http://tappedout.net/mtg-questions/clarification-on-ratchet-bombs-precise-effect/

It works in the same way that in Aristocrats the sac effect is part of the cost so kill spells are less effective as you can always sac in response after target has been declared.

Yeah, Lay of the Land does seem to do what you would want. I guess I'm just disappointed in the card; it seems to be so subpar comparatively to what there has been.

I think it's especially good in this deck since there's really nothing else in the one-drop slot. I really like the setup for the lands I have now, and I think this is the closest it's going to get to a solid 3-color pool post rotation. 2 of each basic other than forests, 4 green-x shocks and 2 sacred foundries. It means there are only 6 lands in the deck I can't use lay of the land with. I am also taking your idea with the manaweft sliver and the hive stirrings. With only 2 mountains and 6 shocks, molten birth is way too hard to cast, and manaweft is good enough as a stand alone even if I dont' draw into hive stirrings.

The artifact issue makes total sense now. Boros Charm is probably a better indestructability choice anyway, so I'll sideboard a bunch. Thanks again!
