Briar shield has benn used instead of giant growth because it gives the creates +1/+1 and if you sacrifice it it gets +3/+3 (but looses the +1/+1) Invigorate and mutagenic growth are ways of powering up the infected creature with out paying mana. Dark ritual allows phyrexian crusader to be bought out on the first turn. It also allos you to useslaughter pact for the equivilent of (B).
