Creature Challenge #12 Zombies

by Jessie on 14 May 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (0 cards)

No sideboard found.

The owner of this deck hasn't added a sideboard, they probably should...

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

The last deck of Creature Challenge. Have to revise my Vampire deck, and then I can start the tourney. To see whom the best subtype/Creature in Magic is :) Or something like that.

Anyways, Zombies. What can you say? You can't keep them down. They die and come back from the grave. That is the main theme here.

How will Zombies do in the Tournament? Can they take on Humans? Maybe Merfolk? Faeries or Dragons?

How to Play

Okay. Okay. Okay...I suck at building black decks and am not doing justice by Black. I get it. Any help, to correct that, would be appreciated.

What I tried to do was make my creatures pesky as hell to remove.
Gravecrawler is main example here. To me, he is the best 1 drop Black card in Magic. The guy just won't stay dead!!!

I have 6 cards, Entomb/Buried Alive that put my best creatures in the graveyard, then i have 6 more cards, Exhume/Unearth that bring them unto the battlefield.

Exhume/Unearth also acts as regeneration beyond what just Gravecrawler provides.

Blood Scrivener and Grave Defiler are what makes sure I keep cards in my handD to play.

Death Baron/Lord of the Undead provide +1/+1 pump to my Zombies, death touch, and regeneration.

Gray Merchant of Asphodel provides both direct damage and life gain.

Stillmoon Cavalier adds versatility with any extra mana I have lying around. She can have both flying and first strike...and can be pumped up.

Unholy Grotto is a land made for Zombie decks...it adds even more regeneration. Zombies are now getting pesky to get rid of, right?

Finally...since I am not that good at Black decks...and since I have Gravecrawler who can come back from the grave...as well as 13 other cards that bring my creatures back from the grade...I added a huge board swipe card in Nevinyrral's Disk. Figure I can remove all the creatures (as well as artifacts and enchantments) on the board and I can recast mine out faster than my opponent can.

Deck discussion for Creature Challenge #12 Zombies

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Take out Gray, and add in Festering Goblin or Fleshbag Marauder? Maybe? Or Putrid Imp?

Definitely need help, here.

So, you need help?
Well, I can say straight away that since you are running Entomb-Exhume combo, you need big creature that you can get very early.
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is great choice.

Other good zombie cards are Call to the Grave, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Undead Warchief and Geralf's Messenger. Try adding some of those.
This deck requires a little work, but I think that this deck is unrefined diamond. This can become something beautiful.

Mikaeus seems amazing!!! Absolutely need him. Let me look and think about the other cards...and what would be best taken out.

I think maybe Gray Merchant is a weak link or doesn't fit any sort of deck design I may have going.

Or maybe instead of 6 cards that put cards in the graveyard and 6 cards that get cards out of the graveyard...maybe I can run 4 of each? But which would I take out between Buried Alive/Entomb. And which one out of Exhume/Unearth?

As always, thanks for the help!

Out of curiosity (and laziness that I have not searched), do you have a budget Faerie deck? My wife has been begging, for a long time now, for me to teach her magic. I am thinking a "pretty" Faerie deck would be a start.

I can cook up a Faerie Starter Budget for you, if you wish.

Yes.

Only concern...is that you can consider that she has never played Magic before. Something like Counterspells and the tricks that Faeries bring to the table...may be too much for a beginner. I sorta wished she liked easy to understand Beasts...or something of that nature! But, alas, Faeries are "pretty," says my wife. :)

I can try to create simple Faerie deck. I guess that's possible.
Though I think I'm going to add sideboard for it which contains more complicated cards. Your wife can use them when she has gotten more into the MtG.

1st opponent for Zombies were Humans.

Humans slowly, too slowly started to gain life at the beginning of the game. They were up to 26 damage before they started to become overwhelmed with Entomb/Buried Alive and Unearth/Exhumed Gravecrawlers, Death Barons, and Grey Merchants. Humans just could not keep up.

End of Turn 8. Zombie deck had 9 Zombies in play, all were 3/3 or greater in power. 4 of those Zombies were Gravecrawlers. Just nasty!

Humans vs. Zombies.
Turn 8. Zombies 20 life. Humans 0 life.
Zombies 1-0
Humans 0-1
