Deck Description

Here is the deal...over the last year I have got back into Magic (after several years of not playing) and built over 100 decks.

I am burnt out.
Out of ideas.
Out of cards to build around.
Out of themes to build around.

I want your help.

Have an idea for a deck? Or do you have an interesting card that you always wanted to see someone try to build a deck around? Is there a certain mechanic you wish to be seen used in a deck? Any rare tribal decks you need ideas or help with?

How to Play

Simple, throw out a card or mechanic or ability or theme or idea or tribe or anything that you want to be seen made into a deck.

3 rules:

1. Check out my decks I have already made before you suggest an idea.
Example. Don't suggest a flying deck for me to build or a goblin deck for me to build because I already have a flying deck and a goblin deck.

2. Try to be unique. Don't ask for a dime a dozen deck that everyone has done. That is the whole point of this Challenge. I have already built a mill deck, a discard deck, a flying deck, a deathtouch deck, a trample deck, a land destruction deck, a goblin deck, a zombie deck, etc etc. If it is a basic type deck I have already probably made it.

3. You can decide the price or the Format of the deck.

i would like to see a narset EDH deck that would be about non creature spells or a mono blue draw EDH deck with arcanis

Ugh. EDH.

Okay. Don't expect anything too great. I suck at making EDH decks. And have never even played one or played against on. But will try.

You want Arcanis the Omnipotent as the Commander card, right?

Or you prefer the Narset, Enlightened Master Commander deck?

I will definitely make one of them.

The Sideboard Switcheroo!

I've though about doing this but have yet to actually built anything. Have the sideboard a different color than what is used maindeck and swap out a whole colors when sideboarding. Example: Game 1 RU, Game 2 UB, Game 3 BR. The swap would directly influence the way the deck is played. Maybe red brings burn, blue counterspells and black creatures. Would probably be hard not to give it away with the land and be a true surprise. It might turn out to be lame overall but at very least I'm hoping it's something that will spark your interest and help get you past that burn out. Happy Building.

That might even be an interesting game type. You have to switch out a color each game. Maybe not. Meh.

(I suppose bonus points for using Switcheroo, lol)

Okay. Interesting.

About the rules.
Sideboard remains at 15 cards, right?
My only fear is that out of those 15 cards, half or more may have to be mana/land cards.

I will get on it as soon as I can.

I have a deck to build for narfnarf 1st.
2nd is a deck for vanguard.

I think you should use fetch lands, so that you could get the lands that are the colors you are using that game. I would probably make it grixis and make the red young pyromancer and monastery swiftspear and burn, the blue cards like counterspells that cost around 1 or 2 mana, and maybe a few delvers of secrets, and the black like dark confidant and slaughter pact, maybe dismember because it is played in many decks. :)

Okay, I want to build a deck with four trapmaker's snare, and then some cards like peer through depths and merchant scroll to get the snare or get a trap and then have a bunch of 1 of's traps to fetch. Thank you! :)

Probably would do some Kithkin/Sliver combo with Hivestone. Have a few decks to do first, but sure, I could come up with a +1/+1 Kithkin/Sliver deck.

It's cool. Super busy with kids and college anyways. I just love that I can come to Magic to relax.
The Kithkin/Sliver combo deck has perked my interests though!

Yea that looks intense, You need like the perfect mana base to work it. Its totally possible to pull it off but yea thats gonna be a pain in the ass, not to mention all the tweaking here and there after you think you have finished it. Good luck haha

Yep. Because the 15 cards in the sideboard I want to be all black (as the third color). I do not want lands in the sideboard...so the mana has to be perfect. And probably expensive like fetches. Expensive is lame. Or stuff like Mana Confluence and City of Brass.

Here are two for you:
-Gruul Burn with Wild Nacatl, kird ape, and tarmogoyf as your creatures
The rest burn spells, Good Luck!
-Next, Boros Aggro, with Nobilis of War, Balefire Liege, Boros Reckoner, Lightning Helix, and double strikers like Hearthfire Hobgoblin

You could also build a deck revolving around ghoultree, bridge from below, and demon of deaths gate, or a landfall deck with OB nixilis, a hypergenesis deck, a polymorph deck, there is so much out there still... you are never done brewing, how about a no-land deck?

Not sure what Gruul or Boros are/is. But I can use the cards you mentioned, sure.
I have a 60 card creature deck for your no land deck, already in my deck library. :)
It is a deck, as mentioned, with 60 creatures. No spells. No lands. No artifacts. Nothing but creatures.
It will be a while...I have a deck or two to make before your decks.

Yep, I know KnightoftheHokeyPokey made a great boros deck too.

Speaking of, he has plummeted in price!!!

How much was Boros Reckoner at one point? Over 20 dollars?!
You can buy one now for 2.30 usa dollars.
You can buy a used one for less than 2 dollars!!!

With him and Lightning Helix in the same deck...I can see why the deck is so popular.
I will run Pyroclasm, for sure in the deck.
That will be a little unique, right? Most people don't play Pyroclasm in Boros decks, or do they?
The idea rocks. Pyroclasm nukes all creatures with defense 2 or less. Your Boros survives Pyroclasm and actually redirects the damage to a creature/opponent allowing you to deal an extra 2 damage to a creature nuking him if the creature has a defense of 4 or less.

yea i felt cool when i opened up two in 4 booster packs back when he was 10 or 12 bucks. should have sold him back then, but i thought his price would have stayed high for awhile. i guess no one is playing with him in standard lol

oh and i lied, i dont have Nobilis of war in my deck, sorry! reason being, balefire liege IS a better Nobilis. Especially if your playing with a lot of dual color creatures, which i am. So its kind of pointless to run both, unless your using a lot of single color creatures

If you are really out of ideas and in a lull, I will not only give you challanges but also ides how to spice up your magic life (EVERYONE ELSE: FEEL CHALLENGED YOURSELF!):

My challenges:

* "Pass the gas"
Build a deck around Freyalise's Winds.

* "The Fungusaur"
Build a deck with the philosophy "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger"

* "Junkdiving"
Build the best deck you can only using cards from Prophecy, Planeshift and Legions.

* "Uncommon"
Build a deck with Uncommons-only (plus basic lands) in a format of your choice.

* "Hands down"
Build a Modern legal deck for an alternate universe where Magic is played with a starting hand of 0 cards (obviously, no mulligan and whoever goes first draws a card).

* "The Lore"
Build a deck that tells a story through card names, images and flavour text + some imagination. The resulting deck doesn't have to be strong, but should be playable.

* "The Deck of Eli"
Ask me what 4-Card-Blind is and how you can play it.

* "The Challenge challenge"
Come up with an idea how to challenge me beyond asking to build a deck around specific cards.

Okay. Will do a few of those Puschkin, for sure.
Some of those challenges I may not do. "The Lore" I already covered when I made a deck featuring William Shakespear flavor text.

The first one is Freyalise's Winds.
Only 9 decks in Mtgvault history running Freyalise's Winds....so that is a challenge indeed!!!

Stuff that taps opponent's items come quickly to mind. I.e. Blue cards like Deluge.
Ring of Gix...i remember you, and you shall come in handy too!
And Winter Orb...is that possible to fit in? Or too consuming with Winds?
I will work on it.
And the untap cards. I have never used them...but I think they would work, right? Maybe not.

Update Puschkin.
Pass the Gas is mostly complete, I sent you the private link to give it a look over first.
The Hands Down I am going to turn down. Just seems too damn slow. It would mostly end up being blue with Draw Spells.
The Fungusaur deck I am not going to do because I feel like my Tendril Deck is a version of that. Either I die through Ad Nauseam or I win.
The Lore deck I am not going to do because I have several themed decks. Ninja Turtles. Wizard of Oz, William Shakespeare. etc.

Going to get started on the uncommon or Junkdiving deck soon.
Fyi, isn't Junkdiver a card...not in the above mentioned expansions, though?
Interesting enough, I have a lot of the Prophecy cards. That was right around the time I quit playing.

What do you mean with Jeskai? Jeskai Ascendancy? That card isn't exactly obscure, neither is the heroic mechanic, in fact it's all over the place.

Same question, you mean a deck built around Jeskai Ascendancy?

If so, sure, I could add in heroic and modern legal.

If you don't want/mean for me to use Jeskai Ascendancy, then what do you mean by a Jeskai deck?

In the meantime (waiting on you to update this thread) I am trying to build a deck with this concept:

Eidolon of the Great Revel
A lot of alternative casting cost spells.
Cards that cost 4 mana or more (so they won't trigger Great Revel) that I can sack mountains to cast, or that I can discard a red card to cast, or that I can suspend into play, etc etc.

Puschkin, advice for the said deck above?
And question, if the bestow cost or the suspend cost of the card is 3 or less mana, it does not trigger Great Revel if the cards converted mana cost is 4 or greater, right?

I mean a Jeskai heroic with: Anax and Cymede, Akroan Crusader and yes jeskai acendancy but i thought earlier somthing a little more enchantment focused with the occasional instant.
And it's need to be fast, sanic fast.
Furthermore by Jeskai i'm just saying red/white/blue.

OH JESSIE!!!!!!
Guess what?!?! I have a deck challenge for you and I have been working hard on this, if you know anything at all about dredge, plz hlp!
So, with the recent modern unbannings, dredge is now possible.
There are too many cards in modern that aren't being used right now, for example, bloodghast, narcomoeba, bridge from below... the list goes on. Any way. I have been doing nothing but building dredge decks since the announcement came out.

Yet somehow, the pieces don't quite fit together just right.... I am so close, yet so far away. Why don't you take a look and see what you can find. I know it works, I just don't know how to get it to work. I am almost certain it WILL be a combo deck. The problem I am having is that I cannot go off in one turn. It takes 1 turn to reanimate, and 1 turn to kill them. Even using something like Worm Harvest then reanimating Flame-Kin Zealot next turn with unburial rights doesn't allow you to do that turn 3... Turn 4 at the earliest. Okay, next on the agenda, I would like to point out how important Grinning Ignus is in these decks. He allows you to produce at least 2 mana if not more. So take 4 colorless mana symbols off each card you put in, and that is what you are going to be paying for those spells. The final thing is that you can generate infinite mana with Grinning Ignus and Lotleth Troll, uncountable, but keep in mind that you only generate colorless mana with that, and Lotleth Troll may not always be on the battlefield. Another way to use this combo is with 2 grinning ignus, 2 initial red mana, and 2 phantasmagorians. You use one Phantasmagorian to discrad the other and the 2 ignus. Then bring the ingus back to your hand, and repeat the process.
This is about what I have by now, also, Lord of Extension is really nice when you flashback Traitor's Clutch...
I wish you luck, this isn't going to be easy. If it was then we would see modern dredge lists running around. I will keep playing around and playtesting different ideas. The decks I already have are already competitive, but I want them to be even more powerful, to the point that they might be able to top 8 a GP. Keep in mind this is modern, and let me know what you find.
If anyone besides Jessie wants to have a stab at it, go ahead and post your deck in a reply below... I will be checking this thread daily.

Yeah...dredge is too confusing to me.
I only played against it one time.
I lost.
And to this day I am still not sure what he did, lol.

I will say this, I did, the day it went unbanned, buy 1 copy of Golgari Grave Troll.
Dredge does have potential to come back.
However, Dread Return being banned is what is holding the deck back.

I wish I were better at black/graveyard/dredge decks.
I simply have no one to play against.
I am sure if I played several more games against dredge I could then make a dredge deck.

Go there, download everything (the trial)
You can bypass only being able to play standard by going to the deck builders page, clicking tools, and import from clipboard. A page will pop up. A good way to enter stuff in is to download a deck off of MTG Vault as a .txt doc, and copy the whole thing, then paste it into the box. You can play any deck you want in any format for free!

You are right, by the way, with dread return banned, we are going to have to find a much different approach to this. It really doesn't matter how complicated it is, I mean look at how complex the dredge deck with dread return is anyway. It took me for ever to figure out what the hell was going on. But with as big a card pool as there is in modern, there has to be something, I just don't know what it is yet.

So hear is how it works. By turn 4 you should have time to dredge 50 cards of your library, shooting for at least 3 hero of oxid ridge in the yard, accompanied by 2 Dearly Departed. You are also looking for 1 unburial rites, and 1 Angel of Glory's Rise. Use unburial rites on Angel of Golry's rise, get back your 3-4 Hero's, they enter the battlefield with 1-2 +1/+1 counters from the Dearly Departed, which should take them out of bolt and sweeper range. Then attack in with 3-4 5/3 or 6/4's, they each trigger battle cry, which then leads to them all being 9/4's or 8/4's. Damage step, easily over 20 damage for game. Done :P. Did I mention that Hero comes with the added buff of not being able to be blocked by creatures with power 1 or less?
