How to Play

If there's anyone on this site that's been following my decks (unlikely...heheh), they'd notice I'm a big tribal fan. Probably no card shows up in my decks more often than Cavern of Souls. :-)

Some tribes are easy and obvious: Humans (thanks, Innistrad block!), Vampires, Zombies, Elves, Goblins, a few others. Not to take away from those decks at all (I have tribal decks for them all that I love), but some of them practically build themselves. Others take a bit of work.

Here's one of those: Archers. Yes, you've probably noticed this creature type on some of your favorites over the years (Daybreak Ranger, Jagged-Scar Archers, etc.), but not really though much of it. They tend to have reach (unsurprisingly) and deal directed damage (which makes sense), but beyond that, the fact that they're archers hasn't really mattered.

But did you know Archers have their own Lord? And he's really, really sweet, too. Check out Greatbow Doyen.

"Other Archer creatures you control get +1/+1."

Typical Lord ability. Okay, that's nice, but it's far from what makes this tribe worth pursuing. Because it also sports this:

"Whenever an Archer you control deals damage to a creature, that Archer deals that much damage to that creature's controller."

Wowzers. You mean I take a bunch of creatures that specialize in dealing directed damage to other creatures, and every time they do, I get to also deal that damage to the opponent's face? Yeah, seems like it's worth a try.

So here's my first attempt. Many of the Archers here can deal direct damage. The rest can get boosted by Rancor, Selesnya Charm, and Unflinching Courage (which has the added benefit of lifelinking any damage dealt) to run over the enemy and deal combat damage to the opponent, even if blocked!

There are a couple non-Archers here, chosen to prevent board wipes (Dauntless Escort) or certain troublesome spells (Gaddock Teeg). More of this is found in the sideboard, along with a group of Archers that can REALLY punish flying creatures.

What do you think? I believe this tribe has some serious potential, thanks in large part to just a single, brilliantly-designed Lord.
