Deck Description

Just imagine it: it's a sunny day, and you're strolling along, minding your own business. Then suddenly, a massive shadow crosses your path. Just a plane, perhaps? Doesn't sound like it.... You look up to see a huge, winged beast with bluish, rubbery skin. You can almost see through it, into its gut, as a furnace erupts inside and fire shoots up into and out of its maw. It then slams to the earth with a thud and roars...and then, before you eyes, morphs into a little mischievous-looking , bipedal creature and scampers off.

No, it's not a cruel April Fools' Day joke...the joke is instead on your opponent as giant firebreathing fatties hit them and the battlefield with authority!

How to Play

This is the third of a short series of decks focused on Changelings. These memorable creatures from Lorwyn are typically used to bolster other races in Magic...tribes that need a few more creatures to fill in the gaps. But since they count as ALL creature types, why not instead make the Changelings themselves the focus and splash in some cards from multiple tribes that all boost those Changelings?

For red, the two big tribes you probably think of first are both here and both have an impact:

- Dragons contribute Scourge of Valkas with potentially massive enter-the-battlefield damage, and Crucible of Fire, typically a "win more" card with massive Dragons, but a great pump here with mostly weaker Changelings playing the role.

- Goblins are perhaps the biggest and best red tribe, and while I didn't toss in any of their many varied "lords" or other support, Quest for the Goblin Lord is a great card that triggers for each and every Changeling that enters play and can quickly add a major pump to your army. Count yourself lucky if you have it Turn 1!

The other big tribe to make a splash (or perhaps I should say a boom) here is Giants. Blind-Spot Giant is obviously better than in your Standard Giant deck thanks to the likelihood of having other cheap Giants (aka Changelings) in play already when he enters play, but the real impact comes from Thundercloud Shaman, who can just annihilate the opponent's army when he hits the battlefield with your cheaper-than-normal "Giant" army around him.

Spotting your Changelings as Giants also enables branching into white thanks to Ancient Amphitheater, letting you reach not only for awesomely splashable Avian Changeling, but also key cards like Boros Charm and Cloudshift. As painful as Scourge of Valkas and Thundercloud Shaman are entering the battlefield once, imagine them bouncing back into play a second time? Mwaha!
