Deck Description

It's a Merfolk deck stuffed to the gills with tokens, exiling, and mass protection. But wait, that's much more like a white deck, isn't it?

Well, glad you asked....

How to Play

This deck is part of my new "off-color" series, featuring well-known tribes from Magic's history, with a big twist: they're NOT in their traditional color.

Yes, this is a white Merfolk deck. Thanks to tribal and off-color cornucopia Lorwyn, there is easily a large enough showing in this seemingly very un-Merfolk color to make it possible.

The key is to get mass Merfolk. This is accomplished primarily with Stonybrook Schoolmaster and Summon the School. Both hint at a second theme: tapping. These Merfolk love to tap almost as much as today's Inspired creatures. Judge of Currents gains you oodles of life from it and Veteran of the Depths gets bigger and bigger from it. And between Puresight Merrow and Merrow Commerce, you should have plenty of Merfolk left to tap all over again for spells like Weight of Conscience and Devouring Light, removing key threats through exiling.

The one Merfolk you probably do NOT want to tap with these other effects is Harpoon Sniper, because his ability taps himself to deal mass damage to other creatures. Remember, mass Merfolk tokens to spot!

Add in some Intangible Virtue to make those tokens a threat all their own, and this deck has some very nice synergy and a few different ways to remove threats and beat face.

In the sideboard, we have some flying Merfolk (sort of) if you need them with Avian Changelings, more removal, the wonderfully versatile Dawn Charm (and keep in mind its regeneration taps the target), and ways to tap as many Merfolk as you'd like for benefits. Hour of Reckoning is a good "break glass in case of emergency" card to be used when facing decks full of swarming creatures; blow everything up, but hold on to the Merfolk tokens you've built up by then.

What do you think? If you like this unusual color concept, check out my other Off-Color decks, including white Elves, blue Zombies, red Vampires, green and black Goblins, and black and green Humans. (Just go into my Profile and click on the "Off-Color" tag to see the rest.)
