Rats!

...and friends.

How to Play

This is a budget version of my Rat tribal deck, created especially for the ongoing Tribal Deck Budget Challenge (http://www.mtgvault.com/zaklax13/decks/tribal-challenge-whats-yours). For the non-budget version, check here: http://www.mtgvault.com/jre47/decks/oh-rats.

The main theme is pretty obvious: rats! Get a bunch out, make Pack Rat big, copy him a couple times, get MORE rats as others die from Ogre Slumlord, pile up the bodies on both sides of the board until you just overwhelm the opposition. With nearly a third of the deck being Rats, that alone is probably enough to do the job.

But there's more. You're going to have a lot of deaths on your side of the board, by design. Why not profit from that? Tragic Slip is a great way to do so, as is Reaper from the Abyss and Skirsdag High Priest, who both give you big flying beaters to lead your rat swarm into battle. Desecration Demon keeps morbid going if you stall out on your own dirty rodents.

The otherwise completely unremarkable Gutter Skulk is here only because it's a Rat...AND a Zombie, allowing some fun hijinks with morbid/discard master Gravecrawler (after all, you have to discard SOMETHING to get Pack Rat copied) and making Ghoulcaller's Chant a way to recycle the Skulks.

The sideboard can change things up by A.) punishing for all the discard your opponent will be forced into with Ravenous Rats and Drainpipe Vermin (Shrieking Affliction), B.) allowing some more directed morbid triggering if your opponent isn't playing along (Ultimate Price, Victim of Night), C.) thinning out troublesome sweepers or other nasty cards before they can wreck your day (Duress, Appetite for Brains), and/or D.) messing around with reanimation or flashback strategies (Vile Rebirth) while getting yourself more Zombies in the process!
