Deck Description

I wanted to create a modern legal version of my Defender deck, and there are only a few cards that didn't fit. not a direct 1 to 1 change but pretty good. suggestions and comments would be very welcome so that it can be further improved.

Thinking of adding the new card Tuktuk rubblefort, to give everything haste, but not sure what to remove yet. Perhaps taproot kami.

How to Play

This deck is fairly simple.
early board presence with cheap defenders, ramp up to massive X mana spells. Genesis wave then devil's play and Banefire.

Deck discussion for modern legal defender deck

No Assault Formation? I know the idea is to win off a X damage spell or Vent Sentinel's ability, but the Formation is a good backup plan too.

Just did a quick Gatherer search and found a few defenders that may interest you:
> Steel Wall: {1} for a 0/4. What makes this marginally better than Perimeter Captain is it's colourless.
> Cathedral Membrane: This cheeky defender can kill almost anything it blocks. Sure, it has to die to do this, but that normally means you need the thing you blocked to die too. This can also be played on turn 1 by paying 2 life.
> Wall of Tanglecord: Despite costing one more mana, this could replace Wall of Vines as it has a much higher toughness. And again, it's colourless.
> Traproot Kami: If you include a lot more duals that are both Mountain Forest (Stomping Ground) and Forest Plains (Temple Garden), this becomes MUCH better than Wall of Vines.
> Thallid Shell-Dweller: In addition to being a 0/5 for 2 mana, this thing pops out a Saproling every 3 turns.
> Battle Rampart: Biggest use here is to give the mana dorks or Vent sentinel haste.
> Carven Caryatid: A slightly bigger Wall of Omens.

ok. :)

love assault formation here, just need a spot for it. any suggestions for what to swap for it would be great.

steel wall is good here, but the life gain perimeter captain gives is simply too powerful to give up.

cathedral membrane is a wonderfully silly card. love it. :) but not sure what I would swap for it.

traproot kami. I agree that this is a better card than wall of vines. I think that I should probably swap out my lands for shock lands just to run this honestly.

thalid shell dweller is also good. but not sure how it fits. perhaps if you could give me an example?

battle rampart is nice. haste for mana dorks or vent sentinel is really good.

carven caryatid... hm... I like it, but it seems slower than I want for the draw. then again I am not sure I really need the draw so... I could swap it for something else entirely.

thanks!!! :)

I wasn't sure if you wanted to stay specific to those three colors, I've suggested some cards that will have blue {U} or Black {B}.

Mana suggestions:

Exotic Orchard - Add one mana of any color that a land you control could produce
Forbidden Orchard - Add one mana of any color, put a 1/1 colorless spirit token into play under an opponents control
Holdout Settlement - Add one mana of any color, tap an untapped creature you control (or you could just tap it for colorless)
Reflecting Pool - Add one mana of any color that a land you control could produce
Dual lands: Pay 2 life so they don't come into play tapped.
Blood Crypt - {B} or {R},
Breeding Pool - {G} or {U}
Godless Shrine - {W} or {B}
Hallowed Fountain - {U} or {W}
Overgrown Tomb - {B} or {G}
Sacred Foundry - {R} or {W}
Steam Vents - {U} or {R}
Stomping Ground - {R} or {G}
Temple Garden - {G} or {W}
Watery Grave - {U} or {B}

And you could always use Farseek or whatnot to get the ones you need from your library since the Dual lands count as Forest, Islands, Mountains, Plains, or Swamps

Assault Formation - {1}{G} || Your creatures damage is based on toughness instead of power, {G}: Target Defender can attack this turn, {2}{G}: Your creatures get +0/+1 til end of turn.
(Since this has mana abilities you can use them multiple times, such a strong utility for a defender deck. You can attack with your defenders and don't have to rely just on damage spells, the more win conditions the better.. right?)

Carven Caryatid - 2/5, {1}{G}{G} || Defender, draw a card when it comes into play
(This costs 1 more mana than Wall of Omens but it's [+2/+1] stronger)

Consulate Skygate - 0/4, {2} || Defender, Reach
(This would be a good replacement for Wall of Vines as well, does the same effect while having 1 more toughness and its colorless)

Doorkeeper - 0/4, {1}{U} || Defender, {2}{U}, {T}: Mill target player X, X equaling to amount of defenders you control
(Not a necessity, although milling your opponent can give you an advantage)

Foriysian Interceptor - 0/5, {3}{W} || Flash, Defender, can block an additional creature.
(Could be useful, you never know when you need that extra block)

Hornet Nest - 0/2, {2}{G} || Defender, whenever this is dealt damage, put that many 1/1 insects with deathtouch and flying onto the battlefield.
(This could be interesting, a bunch of flying deathtouch bugs)

Trestle Troll - 1/4, {1}{B}{G} || Defender, Reach, {1}{B}{G}: Regenerate Trestle Troll.
(Better than Wall of Vines in my opinion. This is slightly stronger and has regenerate)

Wall of Frost - 0/7, {1}{U}{U} || Defender, Detain
(Cheap wall with a detain, and its a 0/7, so big!)

- - - -
These cards might be ridiculous but it's fun.

Akroma's Memorial - {7} || Creatures you control have flying, first strike, vigilance, trample, haste, and protection from black and red.
(Super defenders?)

Eldrazi Monument - {5} || Creatures you control get +1/+1, have flying, and are indestructible. At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a creature. If you can't, sacrifice Eldrazi Monument.
(This combined with Akroma's Memorial, Assault Formation and Hornet Nest (insect tokens for sacing) would make your Defenders overpowered)

This looks like a fun deck to play though, I might have to build one myself. What I'd look out for is opponents with spell counters and board wipes, seems like this deck would fall hard if it where to be board wiped.

I did find that having B or U felt a little muddy for getting the colors I needed, so I picked the 3 that fit the best. that being said , having dual lands would certainly help.

some of your suggestions are pretty good, and I kind of want to go over them. :)

TLDR at the end.

forbidden orchard is a solid choice here, as it can be used turn 1, and give my anything I need. and my opponent being able to go a little wider really isn't an issue. so that is certainly a valid replacement for city of brass.

shock lands (pay 2 life) are also pretty good, and I am pretty sure my life total isn't going to be much of an issue with perimeter captain out anyways.

exotic orchard and reflecting pool are a little weak here I think because they don't actually add anything I don't already have when they hit the field.
holdout settlement... meh...? if I am going to tap a creature for mana, it is most likely going to be axebane or overgrown battlements, which can already add way more mana usually. and axebane can add any colors in any combination that I want.

I do like assault formation, and I think it would fit here really well. even though I wouldn't use it to attack, but only so I can kill my opponents puny attackers with my absurdly huge creatures. (they get rather large with shield bearers out.)

doorkeeper
this is nice, and I actually did another version of this deck with mill as the focus, and he is in there as a key card. that being said mill is not particularly great as a splash, and doesn't work great as such.

consulate skygate
this is good here. love that it is colorless, not sure I like that it is 2 mana. while it is bigger... it simply seems... slower. and speed is key with this deck. it kind of plays out like a "lame duck" elf deck, and creatures snowball out more creatures.
that being said, this is a good pick as well because of the versatility that colorless nature affords.

foriyisian interceptor
simply too expensive. the extra block IS nice, but at 4 mana that is the top of my mana curve, so it should be game ending. and just having an extra block... doesn't do that. flash is also nice, but not sure it benefits me here.

Hornet nest
I like hornet nest, but it seems too squishy for the price. would love to build a deck around this though. :)

trestle troll
trestle troll is nice, but simply too slow. the regen is wonderful, can't say it is ever bad, but seems a little limited here.

Wall of frost!!!
love wall of frost. :) one of my favorite walls by far. that being said I think that, sadly, it is outclassed by something like Gomazoa. Wall of frost is a fantastic card. one of my favorite cards. cheap, simple, big, and almost always useful.

carven caryatid
this is good, but not sure if I like the slower nature of the card in comparison with wall of omens.

as for memorial and monument... lol... :) those would be interesting, but yeah... not practical I think.

TLDR:

shock lands are good.
more expensive creatures might slow down the deck a bit too much despite be stronger overall.
and assault formation is designed just for this deck I think. but where would I put it? (suggestions would be great.)

I was thinking, since you had 8 creatures that produced mana based on the amount of creatures with defender you controlled that the slightly more expensive creatures would fit in. Although, I do understand the speed.

Maybe replace one Path of Exile and Genesis Wave to put two Assault Formations in, since you have Elixir of Immortality in there you should be able to get a good flow of refreshing your library. You'll be playing everything so fast you'd basically never have a hand after I'd assume turn 5-7. Or just take out 2x Path of Exile, Assault Formation seems more important and the Genesis Wave's rely on permanents, the less sorceries and instants you have the more useful Genesis Wave gets.

yeah, the larger creatures are still usable because of the mana abilities, but the thing is that if you swapped cheaper creatures for more expensive is that it makes the mana abilities less effective.
I do like your suggestion to swap a gen wave and a path for 2 assault formations. will make that change.

you should check out my original deck, see what you think about it.
