Deck Description

I'd tap that.

This is a budget control deck I'm working on for some kitchen table multiplayer games. The budget is pretty small; anything you see in the list that costs more than a buck is something I already have. Any suggestions are appreciated!

UPDATE 2/10/14: Added Sovereigns to slow things down a little, and tweaked the spells and lands a bit.

How to Play

Stall and swing with weenies until you're ready to take control with an angel. Play a Sovereign or a Guildmage early to keep the game nice and slow, and then bide your time until you can tap and kill everything.

If my budget wasn't so sad he absolutely would be.

I realize shocklands aren't exactly budget-friendly; I just happen to have those Fountains lying around.

Because I can totally afford a playset of those when I can't buy Gideon...

What say you to sleep and Training grounds? Sleep gives you a turn to deal with things before you drop the angel, and the Training grounds will turn your Azorius Guildmage into a veritable Gigadrowse.

I like Sleep a lot, and it was in the list for a while... but I prefer doing my shenanigans at instant speed and then dropping the angel. If I cast sleep, my opponents also have an entire turn to deal with me, and they're way more likely to have mana open for counters or removal. I also love Training Grounds, but it really only works with the Guildmage. Another deck, maybe!

Ivory Giant is nice, because it taps all non-white creatures, so you can suspend him on turn 2 and land him and the angel on turn 6, leaving your opponents . . . erm . . . Sunblasted.

Me gusta. I'm skeptical for the same reason I'm not running Sleep, but I'll definitely try it out! Good suggestion.

What about Gideon's Lawkeeper, or Gideon's Avenger?

Both are cool options, but I decided to keep it mostly instant-based. Just personal preference. The Guildmage is definitely less efficient, but her counter ability is really cool and the tap ability doesn't require her to tap. Which is pretty cool.

Gideon's Avenger doesn't tap... it benefits from tapping...

Now there are 4 Cloudshift, when I say this deck for the first time there were only 3 :)

I thought about how nice it would be to blink the Angel, or reset the Geists, or Ponder with the Hussar... and I couldn't resist. haha

Sadly, blinking will kill the Hussar. But if I stop an attacker and Ponder at instant speed, I reckon I can live with it.

Ponder at instant speed, that's just awesome! haha!

Another card that I totally recommend is Venser, the Sojourner for this deck.

And I would totally put him in here if I had the budget. Pretty much anything in here that costs over a buck is stuff I had lying around. :/

Well... Celestial Colonnade and Hallowed Fountain are not exactly cheap D: even 1 Hallowed Fountain cost more than 2 Vensers D:

Right?? Again, slightly out of my pitiful budget but maybe doable. Any recommendations on what to take out? Feeling of Dread is solid but I really like that nice little cantrip on Repel the Darkness.

well, most decks run 22 land, and you have 25. So there's a good place for it. Also, 4 sun blasted angels are a bit much. It's a very expensive card to cast, I'd drop it down at least by 1 or 2 and find a better fit. Maybe a good early blocker incase you cant tap a creature. Also, if your running multiplayer, a good cheap card is ghostly prison or propaganda. It should deter attackers in big group games. Also, beloved champlain is great in multiplayer for a blocker.

25 is a pretty reasonable number for a control list. I've got a decent amount of draw in here, and I don't want to ever miss a land drop: more mana means more shenanigans and quicker angels. I might cut the land base down by one or two after a little playtesting though.

As for the angels, I'm pretty confident with 4. They're never a dead draw: worst case scenario, I have a big flyer. Best case scenario, I have a big flyer and my opponents have nothing. But critters die, and my opponents will make more critters, so more angels never hurts. Again though, I might cut it down a little.

Ghostly Prison and Propaganda are nice, but both cost $3-4 each and they don't really work synergistically with the rest of the deck. You're right though, they would be a lot better for deterring attackers. I might try Windborn Muse as a more budget-friendly option.

I have a similar deck http://www.mtgvault.com/moshpitmachine/decks/blue-white-tap-deck/. Its gone under the knife a bit since i posted it but this works well and stays on a similar budget. I would definitely recommend the gideon's avengers because they do add a bit of insanity to a deck like this, especially in a group game. downpour, blinding beam, and sleep are all great mass tap cards.

HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT IMPOSING SOVEREIGN. Honestly, Downpour and Blinding Beam are probably better options than Repel the Darkness, I just have a cantrip fetish. Tap spells are cheap, when I finally build this I'll probably buy a bunch and experiment.

Gideon's Avenger could be pretty rad, and take some hate off the Angel... Thoughts? In your experience, how does that deck work out?

Gideons avenger definitely steals the hate, some times to well. The tap spells also make him huge and give him a serious opening. Imposing sovereign is great its just to bad it doesn't add to avengers insanity. In my experience this kind of deck works great! my group calls it the bull shit deck and its ranked up there with my buddy's reanimator deck. This is definitely a deck to experiment with to, there are always different combinations that work out really great. But i definitely like this deck let me know how it works out for you
