Questions and Answers:

Why the name change?: As the deck has evolved beyond its original mechanic (Dying Wish + Essence Harvest on a pumped shade then Sacrifice it) It has come to a point where that mechanic has been side boarded all together. Even the Gateway Shade, a card which I still adore and love is no longer in the deck whatsoever. The focus has shifted card by card and has become what I feel is a premier Orzhov build.

As there are many like it, but this has been a journey to make Orzhov competitive. It has also led me to buy cards simply to play test them against what is currently dominating Type II/Standard. Revealing what will work and what will not work when building around extort. You can see this simply by going back through Dying shades versions 1 to 8.

Extort in and of itself is simply and obviously not enough to overcome Jund, Junk, Naya, Esper and RDW. The cards listed above are just the latest build that will have its mettle tested again in FNM.

Play Testing of Version 8 Revealed:
Version 8 Is just as impressive as Version 7. Having the Merciless Eviction handy was just wonderful. Version 9 however is a strong move toward "Who wants a little" By adding Blood Reckoning. Want to see your opponent stop swinging? Drop that on the table. Reanimator, Jund, Naya, RDW.. until they have the removal they need. Their decks stop while you keep casting and keep extorting.

Play Testing of Version 7 Revealed:
Version 7 curb stomps RDW and can hold its own against Re-animator but found the Illusionist's Bracers to be cast and available to equip, but no real time to do it. To much priority on the field. very excited.

Essence Harvests and Extort:
Even if you Essence Harvest for 2. You can extort that four or five times in some cases. turning "take 2" into Take 7. A real treat is already having Exquisite Blood on the Table or the Vizkopa Guildmage. Either of them make your extorts just above and beyond.

Legality of Play: Orzhov infinite Drain life Combo.
Infinite Combo's in legal play are banned. An infinite combo is defined as any action once triggered is unstoppable and cannot be responded to. DCI has ruled that Infinity actions conclude the match into a draw.

Orzhov infinite Drain Life Combo is NOT an infinite combo.
There are two triggers, each can be responded to.
Explanation:
I activate the Guildmage second ability
I then play Tragic Slip on my High Priest. It resolved and
I then Extort you for 1. (Kickoff)
Extort triggers: I gain 1 , you lose 1.
Players Choice: as to the stack Guildmage or Exquisite Blood but...
Guild Mage Triggers: You lose 1 because I gained 1
Exquisite Blood Triggers: Because you lost 1, I gain 1.
Guild Mage Triggers: You lose one because I gained 1.
Exquisite Blood ...

See? Not infinite. At each of those triggers an opponent can respond.

Alternatively Blood Reckoning can kick off the combination with Exquisite Blood being the first trigger in the combo.

For those of you new to magic there are really only three kinds of Decks.
Combo , Control , Aggro.
Esper Control (is ofcourse Control)
Red Deck Wins (is ofcourse Aggro)
Junk Reanimator (is ofcourse Combo)

Likewise Merciless Orzhov is a Combo Deck.

How to Play

When making a combo deck the focus is harmony. How many different paths can I take to get to my combo?

Card Explaination:
Blind Obedience slows RDW and Junk to a crawl.
High Priest makes your opponent hesitate on attacking you.
Liliana's Shade for land fetching. (Get Godless Shrines always and eat two)
Lord of the Void is the best choice finisher (yes better than Griselbrand)
Blood Reckoning stops your opponent from attacking all together

1) Extort into the Guildmages Ability or into Exquisite Blood.

2) Play the Guildmage, Exquisite and Reckoning as soon as possible.

3) Exquisite Blood + Vizkopa Guildmage (2nd ability) + extort (or any life gain) = Infinite Drain Life / infinite Gain Life.

4) If your opponent is desperate enough to attack when Blood Reckoning and Exquisite Blood are on the field do not forget to pop the guildmage 2nd ability after attackers have been declared but before damage. It also creates the infinite combo solution.

5) Utilize your creature destruction and extort your spells always.

6) Blood Reckoning with Exquisite Blood in play, REALLY makes your opponent stop swinging. You have effectively globally cast Drain Life for X where X is the total power of creatures attacking.

This is a Drain life deck. It is not an infinite Combo Deck. The goal is to leech your opponents Health Directly and often.

Having Issues? Sideboard the Reckonings for Essence Harvest or Dying Wish. depending on if your losing creatures to fast or what the issue is.

Utilize Dying Wish and Essence Harvest to refill life loss, Use creature destruction as required. Possible to Crypt Ghast into Lord of The Void on Turn 5.
Again... Extort as much as possible.
