These can be used to take out blockers. Also, depending on the matchup, this deck can easily be played in a more midrange style if aggro isn't working. The sideboard is designed to turn this deck into a midrange deck. Mutilate is practically a black Supreme Verdict. Tragic Slip to add a few more kill spells. Duress to get rid of a noncreature threat early game (The creatures can easily be handled later with the kill spells). Pontiff of Blight for life gain, and it makes a nice midrange finisher.
